The enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag is currently disabled everywhere. When attempted to roll out this at Meta, we've observed multiple false-positives, where counter-based approach would interrupt the render that would've resolved at some later iteration.

This change gates the scenarios that are only discovered with the instrumentation behind enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection flag to warn about potential infinite loop, instead of throwing an error and hitting an error boundary. The main reason is to see if we can a signal on which possible area of scenarios this new approach to infinite loops covers.

The gist of the approach is to ensure that we are still throwing error and breaking the infinite loop, if we were doing this without enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag enabled.

This will log multiple errors if there is an infinite loop, but this should be fine, and it also aligns with the pattern for warnings about passive effects infinite loop.

I've validated that tests in ReactUpdates-test.js are passing independently whether the feature flag is enabled or not.

No, because I am patching a console not to just intercept the message, but to wait for the specific console.error call, pass the test and avoid being stuck in an infinite loop.

I could use assertConsoleErrorDev to validate that the message was logged, but waiting for the message already implies that check.

This is pre-existing check that was already passing in some scenarios, when the update could be tracked through lanes. Like obvious cases where we schedule the infinite loop inside a single component, causing it to loop on itself.

This is outside of the enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag, so the goal here is to keep it as it is, while making the new detection logic non-fatal to get some signal.

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:
https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/6e4f4e4d169256bf77ee88c5f88ab5d26c260f3f/packages/react-dom/src/__tests__/ReactUpdates-test.js#L1871

I think there is a way to convert to gate prama these tests, but it would require more attention

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:

The `enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection` feature flag is currently
disabled everywhere. When attempted to roll out this at Meta, we've
observed multiple false-positives, where counter-based approach would
interrupt the render that would've resolved at some later iteration.
This change gates the scenarios that are only discovered with the
instrumentation behind `enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection` flag to warn
about potential infinite loop, instead of throwing an error and hitting
an error boundary. The main reason is to see if we can a signal on which
possible area of scenarios this new approach to infinite loops covers.
The gist of the approach is to ensure that we are still throwing error
and breaking the infinite loop, if we were doing this without
`enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection` feature flag enabled.
This will log multiple errors if there is an infinite loop, but this
should be fine, and it also aligns with the pattern for warnings about
passive effects infinite loop.
I've validated that tests in `ReactUpdates-test.js` are passing

No, because I am patching a console not to just intercept the message, but to wait for the specific console.error call, pass the test and avoid being stuck in an infinite loop.

I could use assertConsoleErrorDev to validate that the message was logged, but waiting for the message already implies that check.

This is pre-existing check that was already passing in some scenarios, when the update could be tracked through lanes. Like obvious cases where we schedule the infinite loop inside a single component, causing it to loop on itself.

This is outside of the enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag, so the goal here is to keep it as it is, while making the new detection logic non-fatal to get some signal.

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:
https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/6e4f4e4d169256bf77ee88c5f88ab5d26c260f3f/packages/react-dom/src/__tests__/ReactUpdates-test.js#L1871

I think there is a way to convert to gate prama these tests, but it would require more attention

No, because I am patching a console not to just intercept the message, but to wait for the specific console.error call, pass the test and avoid being stuck in an infinite loop.

I could use assertConsoleErrorDev to validate that the message was logged, but waiting for the message already implies that check.

This is pre-existing check that was already passing in some scenarios, when the update could be tracked through lanes. Like obvious cases where we schedule the infinite loop inside a single component, causing it to loop on itself.

This is outside of the enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag, so the goal here is to keep it as it is, while making the new detection logic non-fatal to get some signal.

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:
https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/6e4f4e4d169256bf77ee88c5f88ab5d26c260f3f/packages/react-dom/src/__tests__/ReactUpdates-test.js#L1871

I think there is a way to convert to gate prama these tests, but it would require more attention

The enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag is currently disabled everywhere. When attempted to roll out this at Meta, we've observed multiple false-positives, where counter-based approach would interrupt the render that would've resolved at some later iteration.

No, because I am patching a console not to just intercept the message, but to wait for the specific console.error call, pass the test and avoid being stuck in an infinite loop.

I could use assertConsoleErrorDev to validate that the message was logged, but waiting for the message already implies that check.

This is pre-existing check that was already passing in some scenarios, when the update could be tracked through lanes. Like obvious cases where we schedule the infinite loop inside a single component, causing it to loop on itself.

This is outside of the enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag, so the goal here is to keep it as it is, while making the new detection logic non-fatal to get some signal.

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:
https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/6e4f4e4d169256bf77ee88c5f88ab5d26c260f3f/packages/react-dom/src/__tests__/ReactUpdates-test.js#L1871

I think there is a way to convert to gate prama these tests, but it would require more attention

No, because I am patching a console not to just intercept the message, but to wait for the specific console.error call, pass the test and avoid being stuck in an infinite loop.

I could use assertConsoleErrorDev to validate that the message was logged, but waiting for the message already implies that check.

This is pre-existing check that was already passing in some scenarios, when the update could be tracked through lanes. Like obvious cases where we schedule the infinite loop inside a single component, causing it to loop on itself.

This is outside of the enableInfiniteRenderLoopDetection feature flag, so the goal here is to keep it as it is, while making the new detection logic non-fatal to get some signal.

With @gate, it also checks that the test fails on assertions when gating conditions are not met, but it will just go infinite loop, and it will considered as failed run, not failed assertion. There is a TODO to convert some other tests in this file:
https://github.com/facebook/react/blob/6e4f4e4d169256bf77ee88c5f88ab5d26c260f3f/packages/react-dom/src/__tests__/ReactUpdates-test.js#L1871

I think there is a way to convert to gate prama these tests, but it would require more attention
