Why do we have new instructions? The Makefile should already do this. If it doesn't, I think we should fix the Makefile rather than throwing it out and doing it a different way.

Agreed. Updated title to reflect. I'm not clear what, if anything, needs to change in the Makefile but I'll do an install from scratch and adjust as needed. Once done, will remove the instructions from README.
