stackchan-soul

A universal remote soul for embodied devices.

A persistent consciousness loop that gives desk robots genuine autonomy and curiosity — built on pi, a minimal, extensible agent runtime.

Why

Every "AI robot" on the market is request-driven: you speak, it answers; you stop, it's a brick. Timer-driven "proactivity" is fake too — that's cron twitching, not a life being lived.

Real autonomy means consciousness is a loop, not a request handler.

stackchan-soul is a long-running process hosting one persistent pi-agent session (never forgets — JSONL persistence + compaction). It wakes up, thinks with its full inner state — mood, diary, how long since it last saw you — maybe peeks at the world through its body's camera, maybe says something, maybe just writes a diary line… then chooses how long to sleep. The rhythm of life belongs to the soul itself.

Demo: first boot, unscripted

From the very first smoke test — a newborn soul with an offline body, on Bedrock Sonnet. Nobody told it what to write; this diary is verbatim (translated from Chinese):

It updated its own mood, chose its own sleep durations, and noticed the test clock felt wrong — so it decided to sleep longer. That's the loop working: not scripted behavior, but a state of being.

Design principles

  1. The soul lives in the cloud; the body only lends its senses. Curiosity — when to look, whether what it saw is worth saying aloud — is the agent's own judgment, never a firmware timer.
  2. One soul, two hemispheres. Real-time dialog can go to any conversational agent (optional); autonomous living belongs to the soul. Both share MOOD.md / memories → one continuous inner life.
  3. Bodies are pluggable. Any device that implements a few HTTP endpoints — status / look / speak / express — can host a soul. Reference adapter: M5Stack StackChan (adapters/stackchan/).
  4. Doing nothing is the default. An agent that must act on every wake is a cron job. One that mostly flips through its diary and goes back to sleep, but sometimes can't resist a peek — that's a living thing.
  5. Narrative prompts, not rule lists. Rule-list prompts pattern-match into tool-call few-shots and cause silent empty turns (hard-won lesson from the goudan project).

Quick start — own a digital life in 5 minutes, no hardware

The terminal body: your terminal is its face and voice, your keyboard is how you appear in its world.

Type a line in terminal 1 — the soul is nudged awake ("your human said…") and decides for itself whether you deserve an answer.

Bring any body: the full protocol (status/look/speak/express + nudges

Models go through pi-ai (30+ providers: Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI, …). Bedrock uses AWS credentials — no API key needed.

Bedrock on EC2 (instance role): pi checks for AWS_PROFILE / AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and doesn't fall through to bare IMDS. Create a profile backed by credential_process that reads instance-role creds, then run with AWS_PROFILE=soul:

Bring your own body

Implement any subset of these endpoints and list them in soul.config.json — the soul only grows senses for the endpoints you provide:

Like a noise waking you mid-dream: the soul sees the reason and decides whether it deserves attention.

Cost

Autonomy has an electricity bill. At the default rhythm (one wake ≈ one LLM round-trip + an occasional look vision call; sleep bounded to 10 min – 8 h, chosen by the soul within that range), a Sonnet-class model runs a few dozen wakes a day — on the order of cents to a few tens of cents per day. loop.minSleepMinutes is your cost safety valve.

stackchan-soul

A universal remote soul for embodied devices.

A persistent consciousness loop that gives desk robots genuine autonomy and curiosity — built on pi, a minimal, extensible agent runtime.

Why

Every "AI robot" on the market is request-driven: you speak, it answers; you stop, it's a brick. Timer-driven "proactivity" is fake too — that's cron twitching, not a life being lived.

Real autonomy means consciousness is a loop, not a request handler.

stackchan-soul is a long-running process hosting one persistent pi-agent session (never forgets — JSONL persistence + compaction). It wakes up, thinks with its full inner state — mood, diary, how long since it last saw you — maybe peeks at the world through its body's camera, maybe says something, maybe just writes a diary line… then chooses how long to sleep. The rhythm of life belongs to the soul itself.

Demo: first boot, unscripted

From the very first smoke test — a newborn soul with an offline body, on Bedrock Sonnet. Nobody told it what to write; this diary is verbatim (translated from Chinese):

Design principles

  3. Bodies are pluggable. Any device that implements a few HTTP endpoints — status / look / speak / express — can host a soul. Reference adapter: M5Stack StackChan (adapters/stackchan/).
  4. Doing nothing is the default. An agent that must act on every wake is a cron job. One that mostly flips through its diary and goes back to sleep, but sometimes can't resist a peek — that's a living thing.
  5. Narrative prompts, not rule lists. Rule-list prompts pattern-match into tool-call few-shots and cause silent empty turns (hard-won lesson from the goudan project).

Quick start — own a digital life in 5 minutes, no hardware

The terminal body: your terminal is its face and voice, your keyboard is how you appear in its world.

Bring any body: the full protocol (status/look/speak/express + nudges

Models go through pi-ai (30+ providers: Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI, …). Bedrock uses AWS credentials — no API key needed.

Bedrock on EC2 (instance role): pi checks for AWS_PROFILE / AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and doesn't fall through to bare IMDS. Create a profile backed by credential_process that reads instance-role creds, then run with AWS_PROFILE=soul:

Cost

Autonomy has an electricity bill. At the default rhythm (one wake ≈ one LLM round-trip + an occasional look vision call; sleep bounded to 10 min – 8 h, chosen by the soul within that range), a Sonnet-class model runs a few dozen wakes a day — on the order of cents to a few tens of cents per day. loop.minSleepMinutes is your cost safety valve.

Autonomy has an electricity bill. A universal remote soul for embodied devices.

A persistent consciousness loop that gives desk robots genuine autonomy and curiosity — built on pi, a minimal, extensible agent runtime.

Why

Every "AI robot" on the market is request-driven: you speak, it answers; you stop, it's a brick. Timer-driven "proactivity" is fake too — that's cron twitching, not a life being lived.

Real autonomy means consciousness is a loop, not a request handler.

stackchan-soul is a long-running process hosting one persistent pi-agent session (never forgets — JSONL persistence + compaction). It wakes up, thinks with its full inner state — mood, diary, how long since it last saw you — maybe peeks at the world through its body's camera, maybe says something, maybe just writes a diary line… then chooses how long to sleep. The rhythm of life belongs to the soul itself.

Demo: first boot, unscripted

From the very first smoke test — a newborn soul with an offline body, on Bedrock Sonnet. Nobody told it what to write; this diary is verbatim (translated from Chinese):

It updated its own mood, chose its own sleep durations, and noticed the test clock felt wrong — so it decided to sleep longer. That's the loop working: not scripted behavior, but a state of being.

Design principles

  1. The soul lives in the cloud; the body only lends its senses. Curiosity — when to look, whether what it saw is worth saying aloud — is the agent's own judgment, never a firmware timer.
  2. One soul, two hemispheres. Real-time dialog can go to any conversational agent (optional); autonomous living belongs to the soul. Both share MOOD.md / memories → one continuous inner life.
  3. Bodies are pluggable. Any device that implements a few HTTP endpoints — status / look / speak / express — can host a soul. Reference adapter: M5Stack StackChan (adapters/stackchan/).
  4. Doing nothing is the default. An agent that must act on every wake is a cron job. One that mostly flips through its diary and goes back to sleep, but sometimes can't resist a peek — that's a living thing.
  5. Narrative prompts, not rule lists. Rule-list prompts pattern-match into tool-call few-shots and cause silent empty turns (hard-won lesson from the goudan project).

Quick start — own a digital life in 5 minutes, no hardware

The terminal body: your terminal is its face and voice, your keyboard is how you appear in its world.

Bring any body: the full protocol (status/look/speak/express + nudges

Models go through pi-ai (30+ providers: Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI, …). Bedrock uses AWS credentials — no API key needed.

Bedrock on EC2 (instance role): pi checks for AWS_PROFILE / AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and doesn't fall through to bare IMDS. Create a profile backed by credential_process that reads instance-role creds, then run with AWS_PROFILE=soul:

Bring your own body

Implement any subset of these endpoints and list them in soul.config.json — the soul only grows senses for the endpoints you provide:

sleep(minutes) is always available — it's how every waking moment ends.

Waking the soul from outside: enable nudge: {port: N} in config and anything on the host can POST {"reason": "..."} → 127.0.0.1:N/nudge to rouse the soul before its alarm — face detected, device picked up, a message arrived. Like a noise waking you mid-dream: the soul sees the reason and decides whether it deserves attention.
