Winbit32NT

The "New Technology" core of Winbit32 — same retro-desktop UX, new kernel. Public, MIT-licensed.

This repo is the clean rebuild of the Winbit32 desktop: the window system, the app contract, and the apps themselves, copied out of the original WINBIT32 monolith one at a time and improved where cheap — on one non-negotiable basis:

Anything an app can do must be expressible as a command an agent could call.

UI buttons and MCP tools call the same handlers. The human clicks; the agent calls; one implementation underneath. Windows had its PowerShell moment — every GUI action became a cmdlet and the GUI became one caller. This is ours. The agent-facing distribution lives in winbit32MCP; the embeddable wallet engine is @winbit32/wallet-kit.

Architecture

  • Vite + npm workspaces monorepo (no CRA, no config-overrides surgery).
  • @winbit32/desktop — the window system: WindowManager, window/state contexts, MenuBar, programs registry.
  • Command bus (@winbit32/command-bus) — each app registers commands (name, description, parameter schema, handler). App manifests declare them so the desktop can enumerate them, and the titlebar AI button can show a window's MCP tooling to the user. The descriptor shape is deliberately identical to @winbit32/wallet-kit's KitToolDescriptor, so winbit32MCP mounts NT commands with the same code path it already uses for the kit.
  • No swapkit/doritokit in the core — exchange/wallet functionality sits behind ExchangeProvider / WalletProvider interfaces; providers load lazily on demand.
  • Key custody: agents hold at most one FROST share (t-of-n). Anything that moves funds round-trips through a human cosigner (QR → cosigner app, or the Chrome wallet extension).

Development

Vite + npm workspaces, Vitest for tests, TypeScript for the kernel. The published @winbit32/command-bus runs on Node >= 18, but the dev toolchain needs Node >= 22.12 (Vite 8 loads its config through rolldown, which trips an array-form util.styleText bug on Node 21). An .nvmrc pins it — run nvm use first.

Status

The command bus, the @winbit32/desktop window system and a runnable demo have landed:

  • @winbit32/command-bus — the registry, the shared validator, the JSON-Schema generator and the MCP adapter, with a UI↔MCP parity test proving one handler is reached identically from both transports.
  • @winbit32/desktop — a pure window-state model, the app manifest bound to the bus, the React state layer, the WindowManager brain, and the NT 3.51 chrome — a faithful port of the original WINBIT32 window system (same DOM/class names, desktop.css ported straight from win3.css + scrollbar.css): navy/ inactive-white title bars, centred titles, control box, title-bar AI ? ▼ ▲ (agent / help / min / max, the original's order, sized to fill the bar); drag by the title text; resize from any corner (the little black corner marks); double-click-maximise; minimise-to-desktop-foot (.taskbar); context menu; MenuBar; the classic DialogBox modal; the 16px retro scrollbars; nesting (an MDI workspace inside a window); themeable via @winbit32/desktop/desktop.css. The control box opens a keyboard-navigable system menu (arrow keys / Enter / Escape) carrying the window actions plus Agent Access (MCP) and Help — the same actions as the title-bar AI and ? buttons. Deep-linking: the desktop opens the program named by the URL hash on load and on hashchange, and hashes carry no .exe (#phunter, not #phunter.exeprogramHashSlug).
  • @winbit32/sectools-core — the first crypto-adjacent module: local, keyless BIP-39 phrase hygiene and Shamir secret sharing as pure functions plus five ready-made command descriptors (phrase_validate, phrase_complete, phrase_generate, shamir_split, shamir_combine) that mirror the live winbit32_* MCP tools. Same shamirs-secret-sharing library as the deployed server (byte-compatible shares); pure/browser-safe, no polyfills.
  • @winbit32/cosign-core — Cosigner protocol core: the WB32COSIGN:1:<session>:<key>[:relay] QR/deep-link codec, payload classification for every WB32 family, the AES-256-GCM + deflate message envelope (v2 wire format with v1 fallback), pluggable transports (BroadcastChannel / HTTP relay / manual QR / WebRTC / fan-out), .wult vault-share unwrap (wallet-kit-compatible), and ceremony scaffolding (cosign_sign_* parks at pending_wasm until Orchard FROST / DKLS WASM is mounted). Wire-compatible with the deployed cosigner at winbit32.com/cosign for the session plane. Platform primitives only for crypto/transports (WebCrypto, CompressionStream, fetch). Does not yet complete a co-sign — WASM rounds are the next Cosigner milestone.
  • @winbit32/wallet-bridge — thin adapter: @winbit32/wallet-kit's createWalletKitToolDescriptors → NT CommandDescriptors (zec_* / xmr_* scan/UTXO/broadcast). ROADMAP early high-value wallet ops on the same bus as SecTools/Cosigner; registered in buildNtRegistry.
  • apps/demo — the classic desktop shake-down (Notepad, Clock, Calculator, Paintbrush) plus a Security program group (Security Tools, the Phrase Hunter and the Cosigner), launched from a Program Manager shell (no desktop icons) with real program groups: an Accessories group opens, the Security group starts as a minimised icon — the original Program Manager look. App interiors follow the original apps (white Calculator grid, Courier Clock, plain Notepad). SecTools' Generate/Validate and Shamir Split/Combine buttons — and the Phrase Hunter's missing-word search — run the very commands their title-bar AI button lists, proving the GUI↔command-bus↔MCP loop with real crypto. Classic toy commands are agentExposed: false. The Cosigner matches OG layout (board fills the window; smiley = Load Vault; Session/Parse in the Game menu) and drives session + vault + ceremony park through the bus. npm run dev.
  • apps/mcp — the headless NT-MCP entry: a stdio MCP server that mounts the same bus for agents (tools/list served from the bus's own JSON-Schema generator, tools/call through the self-validating descriptor handlers). Default tool names match the deployed server (winbit32_phrase_*, winbit32_shamir_*) and were verified head-to-head against mcp.winbit32.com: shares split locally reconstruct on the live server. Also serves winbit32_cosign_* and the wallet-kit bridge (winbit32_zec_* / winbit32_xmr_*). npm run mcp. The repo ships a .cursor/mcp.json pointing at the built server, and every window's AI panel links the setup guide and shows a copyable mcp.json example.

Next Cosigner milestone: mount wallet-kit Orchard FROST / DKLS WASM so ceremonies leave pending_wasm (QR camera scan in the demo is companion UI). Wallet observe tools are already on the bus via @winbit32/wallet-bridge. The migration plan and sequencing live in the original repo's ROADMAP.md.

Winbit32NT

Winbit32NT

The "New Technology" core of Winbit32 — same retro-desktop UX, new kernel. Public, MIT-licensed.

This repo is the clean rebuild of the Winbit32 desktop: the window system, the app contract, and the apps themselves, copied out of the original WINBIT32 monolith one at a time and improved where cheap — on one non-negotiable basis:

Anything an app can do must be expressible as a command an agent could call.

UI buttons and MCP tools call the same handlers. The human clicks; the agent calls; one implementation underneath. Windows had its PowerShell moment — every GUI action became a cmdlet and the GUI became one caller. This is ours. The agent-facing distribution lives in winbit32MCP; the embeddable wallet engine is @winbit32/wallet-kit.

Architecture

  • Vite + npm workspaces monorepo (no CRA, no config-overrides surgery).
  • @winbit32/desktop — the window system: WindowManager, window/state contexts, MenuBar, programs registry.
  • Command bus (@winbit32/command-bus) — each app registers commands (name, description, parameter schema, handler). App manifests declare them so the desktop can enumerate them, and the titlebar AI button can show a window's MCP tooling to the user. The descriptor shape is deliberately identical to @winbit32/wallet-kit's KitToolDescriptor, so winbit32MCP mounts NT commands with the same code path it already uses for the kit.
  • No swapkit/doritokit in the core — exchange/wallet functionality sits behind ExchangeProvider / WalletProvider interfaces; providers load lazily on demand.
  • Key custody: agents hold at most one FROST share (t-of-n). Anything that moves funds round-trips through a human cosigner (QR → cosigner app, or the Chrome wallet extension).

Vite + npm workspaces, Vitest for tests, TypeScript for the kernel. The published @winbit32/command-bus runs on Node >= 18, but the dev toolchain needs Node >= 22.12 (Vite 8 loads its config through rolldown, which trips an array-form util.styleText bug on Node 21). An .nvmrc pins it — run nvm use first.

Status

The command bus, the @winbit32/desktop window system and a runnable demo have landed:

  • @winbit32/command-bus — the registry, the shared validator, the JSON-Schema generator and the MCP adapter, with a UI↔MCP parity test proving one handler is reached identically from both transports.
  • @winbit32/desktop — a pure window-state model, the app manifest bound to the bus, the React state layer, the WindowManager brain, and the NT 3.51 chrome — a faithful port of the original WINBIT32 window system (same DOM/class names, desktop.css ported straight from win3.css + scrollbar.css): navy/ inactive-white title bars, centred titles, control box, title-bar AI ? ▼ ▲ (agent / help / min / max, the original's order, sized to fill the bar); drag by the title text; resize from any corner (the little black corner marks); double-click-maximise; minimise-to-desktop-foot (.taskbar); context menu; MenuBar; the classic DialogBox modal; the 16px retro scrollbars; nesting (an MDI workspace inside a window); themeable via @winbit32/desktop/desktop.css. The control box opens a keyboard-navigable system menu (arrow keys / Enter / Escape) carrying the window actions plus Agent Access (MCP) and Help — the same actions as the title-bar AI and ? buttons. Deep-linking: the desktop opens the program named by the URL hash on load and on hashchange, and hashes carry no .exe (#phunter, not #phunter.exeprogramHashSlug).
  • @winbit32/sectools-core — the first crypto-adjacent module: local, keyless BIP-39 phrase hygiene and Shamir secret sharing as pure functions plus five ready-made command descriptors (phrase_validate, phrase_complete, phrase_generate, shamir_split, shamir_combine) that mirror the live winbit32_* MCP tools. Same shamirs-secret-sharing library as the deployed server (byte-compatible shares); pure/browser-safe, no polyfills.
  • @winbit32/cosign-core — Cosigner protocol core: the WB32COSIGN:1:<session>:<key>[:relay] QR/deep-link codec, payload classification for every WB32 family, the AES-256-GCM + deflate message envelope (v2 wire format with v1 fallback), pluggable transports (BroadcastChannel / HTTP relay / manual QR / WebRTC / fan-out), .wult vault-share unwrap (wallet-kit-compatible), and ceremony scaffolding (cosign_sign_* parks at pending_wasm until Orchard FROST / DKLS WASM is mounted). Wire-compatible with the deployed cosigner at winbit32.com/cosign for the session plane. Platform primitives only for crypto/transports (WebCrypto, CompressionStream, fetch). Does not yet complete a co-sign — WASM rounds are the next Cosigner milestone.
  • @winbit32/wallet-bridge — thin adapter: @winbit32/wallet-kit's createWalletKitToolDescriptors → NT CommandDescriptors (zec_* / xmr_* scan/UTXO/broadcast). ROADMAP early high-value wallet ops on the same bus as SecTools/Cosigner; registered in buildNtRegistry.
  • apps/demo — the classic desktop shake-down (Notepad, Clock, Calculator, Paintbrush) plus a Security program group (Security Tools, the Phrase Hunter and the Cosigner), launched from a Program Manager shell (no desktop icons) with real program groups: an Accessories group opens, the Security group starts as a minimised icon — the original Program Manager look. App interiors follow the original apps (white Calculator grid, Courier Clock, plain Notepad). SecTools' Generate/Validate and Shamir Split/Combine buttons — and the Phrase Hunter's missing-word search — run the very commands their title-bar AI button lists, proving the GUI↔command-bus↔MCP loop with real crypto. Classic toy commands are agentExposed: false. The Cosigner matches OG layout (board fills the window; smiley = Load Vault; Session/Parse in the Game menu) and drives session + vault + ceremony park through the bus. npm run dev.

Winbit32NT

Winbit32NT

The "New Technology" core of Winbit32 — same retro-desktop UX, new kernel. Public, MIT-licensed.

This repo is the clean rebuild of the Winbit32 desktop: the window system, the app contract, and the apps themselves, copied out of the original WINBIT32 monolith one at a time and improved where cheap — on one non-negotiable basis:

Anything an app can do must be expressible as a command an agent could call.

UI buttons and MCP tools call the same handlers. The human clicks; the agent calls; one implementation underneath. Windows had its PowerShell moment — every GUI action became a cmdlet and the GUI became one caller. This is ours. The agent-facing distribution lives in winbit32MCP; the embeddable wallet engine is @winbit32/wallet-kit.

Architecture

  • Vite + npm workspaces monorepo (no CRA, no config-overrides surgery).
  • @winbit32/desktop — the window system: WindowManager, window/state contexts, MenuBar, programs registry.
  • Command bus (@winbit32/command-bus) — each app registers commands (name, description, parameter schema, handler). App manifests declare them so the desktop can enumerate them, and the titlebar AI button can show a window's MCP tooling to the user. The descriptor shape is deliberately identical to @winbit32/wallet-kit's KitToolDescriptor, so winbit32MCP mounts NT commands with the same code path it already uses for the kit.
  • No swapkit/doritokit in the core — exchange/wallet functionality sits behind ExchangeProvider / WalletProvider interfaces; providers load lazily on demand.
  • Key custody: agents hold at most one FROST share (t-of-n). Anything that moves funds round-trips through a human cosigner (QR → cosigner app, or the Chrome wallet extension).

More packages land per the roadmap: the apps are copied over one at a time. Each app contributes a command module that registers onto the bus.

Development

Vite + npm workspaces, Vitest for tests, TypeScript for the kernel. The published @winbit32/command-bus runs on Node >= 18, but the dev toolchain needs Node >= 22.12 (Vite 8 loads its config through rolldown, which trips an array-form util.styleText bug on Node 21). An .nvmrc pins it — run nvm use first.

The command bus, the @winbit32/desktop window system and a runnable demo have landed:

  • @winbit32/command-bus — the registry, the shared validator, the JSON-Schema generator and the MCP adapter, with a UI↔MCP parity test proving one handler is reached identically from both transports.
