Summary

  • rename the public macOS product from OpenType to Utter across the menu bar, settings, onboarding, permissions, prompts, documentation, website metadata, release workflow, app bundle, executable, and DMG
  • preserve the existing Swift package/module, com.opentype.voiceinput bundle identifier, Application Support/OpenType data directory, opentype CLI/API contracts, repository URL, and legacy app discovery so upgrades keep settings, dictionaries, model caches, permissions, and integrations
  • replace the app artwork with an ImageGen-derived U-shaped microphone mark and ship coordinated light and dark variants through PNG, ICNS, and Icon Composer assets
  • make icon regeneration deterministic and refresh the website icon, adaptive favicon, and social card; also fix the social-card generator's inverted text/image rendering
  • add CI and unit-test coverage for the public brand plus compatibility identifiers

Why

The product needed a shorter, voice-native name and a mark that made the new initial recognizable without losing the existing microphone meaning. A display-only rename was not enough because packaging, release assets, permission copy, prompts, and documentation still exposed the old brand. Renaming compatibility identifiers at the same time would have made macOS and the app treat Utter as a separate installation, so those identifiers deliberately remain stable.

User impact

Users install and launch Utter.app, see Utter throughout the UI, and get a high-contrast U/microphone icon that adapts to light and dark appearances. Existing users retain their settings, history, dictionary, models, Accessibility identity, and CLI integrations.

Validation

  • swift test — 553 XCTest cases passed, 7 environment-gated skips; 2 Swift Testing cases passed
  • bash scripts/ci-basic-checks.sh
  • bash scripts/build-app.sh --app-only --sign=-
  • verified dist/Utter.app contains Contents/MacOS/Utter and the compatibility opentype-cli, with no stale Contents/MacOS/OpenType
  • verified CFBundleName, CFBundleDisplayName, and CFBundleExecutable are Utter, while the bundle identifier remains com.opentype.voiceinput
  • codesign --verify --deep --strict --verbose=2 dist/Utter.app
  • inspected compiled Assets.car light/dark Icon Composer renditions and the packaged ICNS at 256 px
  • launched the release app and found no runtime error logs
  • checked the icon at 1024, 64, and 32 px, including transparent edges and dark/light contrast
  • git diff --check

Migration boundary

This PR does not rename the GitHub repository, website domain, Swift module/product, bundle identifier, Application Support directory, CLI command, HTTP headers, or XPC service. Those can be migrated separately only with explicit compatibility and redirect plans.

  • rename the public macOS product from OpenType to Utter across the menu bar, settings, onboarding, permissions, prompts, documentation, website metadata, release workflow, app bundle, executable, and DMG
  • preserve the existing Swift package/module, com.opentype.voiceinput bundle identifier, Application Support/OpenType data directory, opentype CLI/API contracts, repository URL, and legacy app discovery so upgrades keep settings, dictionaries, model caches, permissions, and integrations
  • replace the app artwork with an ImageGen-derived U-shaped microphone mark and ship coordinated light and dark variants through PNG, ICNS, and Icon Composer assets
  • make icon regeneration deterministic and refresh the website icon, adaptive favicon, and social card; also fix the social-card generator's inverted text/image rendering
  • add CI and unit-test coverage for the public brand plus compatibility identifiers
Why
The product needed a shorter, voice-native name and a mark that made the new initial recognizable without losing the existing microphone meaning. A display-only rename was not enough because packaging, release assets, permission copy, prompts, and documentation still exposed the old brand. Renaming compatibility identifiers at the same time would have made macOS and the app treat Utter as a separate installation, so those identifiers deliberately remain stable.
User impact
Users install and launch Utter.app, see Utter throughout the UI, and get a high-contrast U/microphone icon that adapts to light and dark appearances. Existing users retain their settings, history, dictionary, models, Accessibility identity, and CLI integrations.
Validation
  • swift test — 553 XCTest cases passed, 7 environment-gated skips; 2 Swift Testing cases passed
  • bash scripts/ci-basic-checks.sh
  • bash scripts/build-app.sh --app-only --sign=-
  • verified dist/Utter.app contains Contents/MacOS/Utter and the compatibility opentype-cli, with no stale Contents/MacOS/OpenType
  • verified CFBundleName, CFBundleDisplayName, and CFBundleExecutable are Utter, while the bundle identifier remains com.opentype.voiceinput
  • codesign --verify --deep --strict --verbose=2 dist/Utter.app
  • inspected compiled Assets.car light/dark Icon Composer renditions and the packaged ICNS at 256 px
  • launched the release app and found no runtime error logs
  • checked the icon at 1024, 64, and 32 px, including transparent edges and dark/light contrast
  • git diff --check
Migration boundary
This PR does not rename the GitHub repository, website domain, Swift module/product, bundle identifier, Application Support directory, CLI command, HTTP headers, or XPC service. Those can be migrated separately only with explicit compatibility and redirect plans.
