Summary

  • add a ServiceManagement-backed launch-at-login service using SMAppService.mainApp
  • add a localized “Launch at login” toggle to General settings
  • reflect the system login-item status instead of persisting a duplicate preference
  • surface approval guidance and recover cleanly from registration errors
  • cover status mapping and idempotent registration/unregistration with unit tests

Why

Utter previously had no in-app way to start automatically after a user logs in. This adds the native macOS flow while keeping System Settings as the source of truth.

User impact

Users can enable or disable automatic startup from Settings → General → Startup. If macOS requires manual approval, Utter shows where to approve the login item. English and Simplified Chinese are both supported.

Validation

  • swift test --filter LaunchAtLoginServiceTests — 3 passed
  • swift test — 558 passed, 7 conditionally skipped
  • bash scripts/ci-basic-checks.sh — passed
  • bash scripts/build-app.sh --app-only — release app assembled and signed successfully
  • launched the final release bundle and verified the process remained running from the exact dist/Utter.app path

QA note

The available UI inspection tool could not target this menu-bar-only app’s settings window, so screenshot-level visual QA is not claimed.
