WindowsDiagnosticTool

A simple .Net 8 program that logs useful information to troubleshoot problems related to Windows OS. The movitation came from customer support tickets such as FIN-2307, collecting more extensive logs is required in these cases.

How to Use

The diagnostic behaviors are driven by appsettings.json and can be customized. The json file should be deployed in the same folder as WindowsDiagnosticTool.exe, the program then reads it at every launch.

Diagnostic Log Location

By default, log files can be found in %localappdata%\WindowsDiagnosticTool\logs

You can add --logFolder in CLA to customize log location:

.\WindowsDiagnosticTool.exe --logFolder="C:\someFolder\logs"

NetworkDiagnostic configuration

  • TaskIntervalMinutes: the diagnostic task contains several steps, this config specifies how often it should run task and log result.
  • MaxEventLogEntries: the tool reads Windows Event Log and logs warning/error level events (in the last interval), this config specifies the max number of events to log.
  • ProcessesToLog: this config is an array of keywords. It allows logging the running processes to identify the ones which could interfere with network connection. To log all processes, add "*" to the array.
  • WebSocket.Uris: this config is an array of URIs. If filled, the tool performs extra checks against each URI.
  • WebSocket.ConnectionTest: if set to true, the tool connects to each of WebSocket.Uris and logs the result. If connection is successful, the tool will close it after a few seconds.

GraphicsDiagnostic configuration

Logs per-process GDI objects, USER objects and handle counts (the values shown in Task Manager's "GDI Objects" / "USER Objects" / "Handles" columns) to help diagnose GDI resource leaks, which might be associated with remote/VDI sessions or DPI changes. These counts are read via the Win32 GetGuiResources API. Results are written to GraphicsDiagnostic_.log.

  • TaskIntervalMinutes: how often to sample and log GUI-resource counts.
  • ProcessesToLog: an array of process-name keywords to sample (case-insensitive substring match). Add "*" to log every process. Each interval also records whether the session is a remote/VDI session (SM_REMOTESESSION).

WindowsDiagnosticTool

How to Use

You can add --logFolder in CLA to customize log location:

  • TaskIntervalMinutes: the diagnostic task contains several steps, this config specifies how often it should run task and log result.
  • MaxEventLogEntries: the tool reads Windows Event Log and logs warning/error level events (in the last interval), this config specifies the max number of events to log.
  • ProcessesToLog: this config is an array of keywords. It allows logging the running processes to identify the ones which could interfere with network connection. To log all processes, add "*" to the array.
  • WebSocket.Uris: this config is an array of URIs. If filled, the tool performs extra checks against each URI.
  • WebSocket.ConnectionTest: if set to true, the tool connects to each of WebSocket.Uris and logs the result. If connection is successful, the tool will close it after a few seconds.

WindowsDiagnosticTool

A simple .Net 8 program that logs useful information to troubleshoot problems related to Windows OS. The movitation came from customer support tickets such as FIN-2307, collecting more extensive logs is required in these cases.

How to Use

The diagnostic behaviors are driven by appsettings.json and can be customized. The json file should be deployed in the same folder as WindowsDiagnosticTool.exe, the program then reads it at every launch.

Diagnostic Log Location

By default, log files can be found in %localappdata%\WindowsDiagnosticTool\logs

You can add --logFolder in CLA to customize log location:

.\WindowsDiagnosticTool.exe --logFolder="C:\someFolder\logs"

NetworkDiagnostic configuration

  • TaskIntervalMinutes: the diagnostic task contains several steps, this config specifies how often it should run task and log result.
  • MaxEventLogEntries: the tool reads Windows Event Log and logs warning/error level events (in the last interval), this config specifies the max number of events to log.
  • ProcessesToLog: this config is an array of keywords. It allows logging the running processes to identify the ones which could interfere with network connection. To log all processes, add "*" to the array.
  • WebSocket.Uris: this config is an array of URIs. If filled, the tool performs extra checks against each URI.
  • WebSocket.ConnectionTest: if set to true, the tool connects to each of WebSocket.Uris and logs the result. If connection is successful, the tool will close it after a few seconds.

GraphicsDiagnostic configuration

Logs per-process GDI objects, USER objects and handle counts (the values shown in Task Manager's "GDI Objects" / "USER Objects" / "Handles" columns) to help diagnose GDI resource leaks, which might be associated with remote/VDI sessions or DPI changes. These counts are read via the Win32 GetGuiResources API. Results are written to GraphicsDiagnostic_.log.

  • TaskIntervalMinutes: how often to sample and log GUI-resource counts.
  • ProcessesToLog: an array of process-name keywords to sample (case-insensitive substring match). Add "*" to log every process. Each interval also records whether the session is a remote/VDI session (SM_REMOTESESSION).
