X-Lisp Statistics (XLS)

This is an incomplete, undocumented, port of parts of XLisp-Stat to Common Lisp. It is intended as a way to ease porting of existing XLS code to the new version of Lisp-Stat.

In most cases, XLS will depend on certain package from CLS, but never the other way around. This allows us to test new ideas and code here before deciding whether to move them to CLS.

As an example: the LS version of SELECT is an enhanced and generalised selection package. Its method signature is slightly different. In using LS:SELECT here, we have modified the XLS code to use the new signature.

Porting Notes

Iteration

XLisp-Stat lacked a looping constructing, and most iterations are done with map-elements. Although a version of map-elements is supplied here, we suggest rewriting the code using iterate, ideally, or CL mapping constructs if you prefer map.

Objects

The early attempts to provide compatibility used lsobjects.lsp to provide an object layer similar to flavors, that XLISP used. This was a message passing style. This was, we think, to provide backward compability for existing XLisp-Stat code. We do not believe this to be worth the effort to maintain, as porting from XLisp-Stat style objects to CLOS is relatively straightforward.

Tests

Not a great deal of effort goes into resolving the warnings produced by compilation of code and tests. The tests are expected to all run successfully.

As an example: the LS version of SELECT is an enhanced and generalised selection package. Its method signature is slightly different. In using LS:SELECT here, we have modified the XLS code to use the new signature.

Porting Notes

Iteration

XLisp-Stat lacked a looping constructing, and most iterations are done with map-elements. Although a version of map-elements is supplied here, we suggest rewriting the code using iterate, ideally, or CL mapping constructs if you prefer map.

Objects

The early attempts to provide compatibility used lsobjects.lsp to provide an object layer similar to flavors, that XLISP used. This was a message passing style. This was, we think, to provide backward compability for existing XLisp-Stat code. We do not believe this to be worth the effort to maintain, as porting from XLisp-Stat style objects to CLOS is relatively straightforward.

Tests

Not a great deal of effort goes into resolving the warnings produced by compilation of code and tests. The tests are expected to all run successfully.

Debugging Hints

A commonly useful shortcut is C-c ~ in Lisp source files, which switches the REPL to the directory of the file and the effective package at point.
