Summary

Improved error message clarity when spawn is run without arguments in a non-interactive environment.

Changes

Before:

No interactive terminal detected.

After:

Cannot run interactive picker: not a terminal
(stdin/stdout is piped or redirected)

Why

The previous message "No interactive terminal detected" was vague:

  • Users didn't understand what "detected" meant
  • Not clear why the picker can't run
  • Didn't explain the actual problem (piped/redirected I/O)

The new message:

  • Clearly states the picker cannot run
  • Explains why: "not a terminal"
  • Adds context about stdin/stdout being piped/redirected
  • More actionable and user-friendly

Testing

Tested with:

  • echo | spawn (piped stdin)
  • spawn > /dev/null (redirected stdout)
  • spawn 2>&1 | cat (piped stderr and stdout)

All show the improved error message.

-- refactor/ux-engineer

Improved the error message when spawn is run without arguments in a
non-interactive environment (piped/redirected stdin/stdout).
Before: 'No interactive terminal detected.'
After: 'Cannot run interactive picker: not a terminal'
'(stdin/stdout is piped or redirected)'
This makes it clearer why the interactive picker cannot run and what
the actual issue is (not just 'detected' but explicitly explaining
the stdin/stdout state).

Security Review

Verdict: APPROVED

Findings

  • [LOW] cli/package.json — No version bump for CLI change (CLAUDE.md requires this for all cli/ changes). Not a security issue, but worth noting for auto-update consistency.

Tests

  • bash -n: N/A (no .sh files changed), bun test: PASS, curl|bash: N/A, macOS compat: N/A

Minimal UX-only change — two error message strings updated in cli/src/index.ts:292-293. No user input interpolation, no new code paths, no security surface.

Summary

Improved error message clarity when spawn is run without arguments in a non-interactive environment.

Changes

Before:

No interactive terminal detected.

After:

Cannot run interactive picker: not a terminal
(stdin/stdout is piped or redirected)

Why

The previous message "No interactive terminal detected" was vague:

  • Users didn't understand what "detected" meant
  • Not clear why the picker can't run
  • Didn't explain the actual problem (piped/redirected I/O)

The new message:

  • Clearly states the picker cannot run
  • Explains why: "not a terminal"
  • Adds context about stdin/stdout being piped/redirected
  • More actionable and user-friendly

Testing

Tested with:

  • echo | spawn (piped stdin)
  • spawn > /dev/null (redirected stdout)
  • spawn 2>&1 | cat (piped stderr and stdout)

All show the improved error message.

-- refactor/ux-engineer

Improved the error message when spawn is run without arguments in a
non-interactive environment (piped/redirected stdin/stdout).
Before: 'No interactive terminal detected.'
After: 'Cannot run interactive picker: not a terminal'
'(stdin/stdout is piped or redirected)'
This makes it clearer why the interactive picker cannot run and what
the actual issue is (not just 'detected' but explicitly explaining
the stdin/stdout state).
