Summary

Fixes MEDIUM severity vulnerability: predictable temp file path in sprite/lib/common.sh:237 allows symlink attacks on remote servers.

Changes

Security Impact

Before: Attacker on remote server could predict temp file path and create symlink to arbitrary file, causing mv to overwrite it.

After: Temp path uses 8 bytes (64 bits) of cryptographic randomness, making prediction computationally infeasible.

Related

Test Plan

  • Syntax check passes: bash -n sprite/lib/common.sh
  • Manual verification: temp path generation uses proper randomness
  • Functional test: Sprite script uploads work correctly with new temp paths

-- refactor/security-auditor

Replace PID-based temp path with cryptographically random generation
to prevent symlink attacks on remote servers.
Severity: MEDIUM
Finding: sprite/lib/common.sh:237 used $$ (PID) for temp file naming,
which is predictable and allows symlink race attacks.
Fix: Use openssl rand or /dev/urandom for 8-byte random suffix,
matching the hardened pattern from PR #1039 for shared/common.sh.

Security Review

Verdict: APPROVED

Findings

No security issues found. This PR contains only security improvements:

  • MEDIUM → FIXED: Replaced predictable PID-based temp file naming with cryptographically random generation (8 bytes entropy)
  • Prevents symlink attack vector on remote servers
  • Matches hardened pattern from PR #1039
  • Secure fallback chain: openssl → /dev/urandom → fail-safe (no weak fallback)

Tests

  • bash -n: PASS
  • Source test: PASS
  • Randomness verification: PASS (both methods generate proper 16-char hex)
  • curl|bash: OK (source fallback pattern unchanged)
  • macOS compat: OK (standard commands only)

Additional Checks

  • No command injection vectors
  • No credential exposure
  • No path traversal issues
  • Proper quoting maintained
  • Remote path validation intact (lines 230-233)

Recommendation: Merge immediately. This addresses a known vulnerability with no regressions.

  • Syntax check passes: bash -n sprite/lib/common.sh
  • Manual verification: temp path generation uses proper randomness
  • Functional test: Sprite script uploads work correctly with new temp paths

-- refactor/security-auditor

Replace PID-based temp path with cryptographically random generation
to prevent symlink attacks on remote servers.
Severity: MEDIUM
Finding: sprite/lib/common.sh:237 used $$ (PID) for temp file naming,
which is predictable and allows symlink race attacks.
Fix: Use openssl rand or /dev/urandom for 8-byte random suffix,
matching the hardened pattern from PR #1039 for shared/common.sh.

Security Review

Verdict: APPROVED

Findings

No security issues found. This PR contains only security improvements:

  • MEDIUM → FIXED: Replaced predictable PID-based temp file naming with cryptographically random generation (8 bytes entropy)
  • Prevents symlink attack vector on remote servers
  • Matches hardened pattern from PR #1039
  • Secure fallback chain: openssl → /dev/urandom → fail-safe (no weak fallback)

Tests

  • bash -n: PASS
  • Source test: PASS
  • Randomness verification: PASS (both methods generate proper 16-char hex)
  • curl|bash: OK (source fallback pattern unchanged)
  • macOS compat: OK (standard commands only)

Additional Checks

  • No command injection vectors
  • No credential exposure
  • No path traversal issues
  • Proper quoting maintained
  • Remote path validation intact (lines 230-233)

Recommendation: Merge immediately. This addresses a known vulnerability with no regressions.

Summary

Fixes MEDIUM severity vulnerability: predictable temp file path in sprite/lib/common.sh:237 allows symlink attacks on remote servers.

Changes

Security Impact

Before: Attacker on remote server could predict temp file path and create symlink to arbitrary file, causing mv to overwrite it.

After: Temp path uses 8 bytes (64 bits) of cryptographic randomness, making prediction computationally infeasible.

Test Plan

  • Syntax check passes: bash -n sprite/lib/common.sh
  • Manual verification: temp path generation uses proper randomness
  • Functional test: Sprite script uploads work correctly with new temp paths
