[P2] Gate shared-course-context writes behind the Class Intel toggle #72

Description

@AndresL230

Problem

The "Class intel" toggle (use_shared_context, persisted in localStorage["sapling_shared_ctx"]) only gates the read path — whether the shared course context is injected into the tutor / quiz prompt. It does not gate the write path: a student who has the toggle off still contributes to the shared context that other students consume.

This is asymmetric in a way that is likely to surprise users: turning the toggle off implies "don't participate in class-level pooling," but in practice it only means "don't receive it."

Where it's gated today (read side)

  • Frontend: frontend/src/components/SharedContextToggle.tsx (state) + frontend/src/components/screens/Learn.tsx:175,226,254 (passes sharedCtx to API)
  • API: frontend/src/lib/api.ts:82-122 (sends use_shared_context in body)
  • Backend gate: backend/routes/learn.py:203if use_shared_context and course_id: ... append SHARED_CONTEXT block
  • Backend gate: backend/routes/quiz.py:51 — same pattern for misconception/weak-area addendum

Where it's NOT gated (write side)

course_context_service.update_course_context is called unconditionally from:

  • backend/services/graph_service.py:276
  • backend/services/graph_service.py:321
  • backend/services/graph_service.py:354
  • backend/services/graph_service.py:523
  • backend/routes/documents.py:39 (import; called from doc processing)

None of these check use_shared_context.

Proposed fix

Decide on the intended semantics:

  1. "Toggle off = don't participate at all" — thread use_shared_context (or a per-user opt-out flag stored on users) through to the write path so contributions are skipped when off. Per-user preference is probably better than per-request, since writes are triggered by background graph mutations, not user-initiated requests.
  2. "Toggle off = don't consume, but still contribute" — keep current behavior, but rename the UI control and update the tooltip in SharedContextToggle.tsx:99-103 so users understand they're still feeding the pool.

Option 1 is the user-protective default. Option 2 is cheaper and probably matches what the toggle was designed for, but needs the copy fix to be honest.

Other notes

  • The toggle is per-device (localStorage), not synced to the user account — worth deciding if that's intentional given this is effectively a privacy preference.
  • Default is True everywhere (backend/models/__init__.py and frontend default).

            Other notes

            • The toggle is per-device (localStorage), not synced to the user account — worth deciding if that's intentional given this is effectively a privacy preference.
            • Default is True everywhere (backend/models/__init__.py and frontend default).

[P2] Gate shared-course-context writes behind the Class Intel toggle #72

              Description

              @AndresL230
