Register show_changes in every tool mode and make aggregate review availability an explicit workspace result. Hosts that ignore Apps UI metadata still receive the same review capability.

This also narrows Apps UI registration to the two intended product surfaces: open_workspace and show_changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Review availability is now reported when opening a workspace, including a reason when unavailable.
    • Change reviews are available consistently, with review summaries and affected files surfaced in the change view.
    • UI metadata can be enabled or disabled through the ui.enabled setting, enabled by default.
  • Documentation

    • Updated workflow, configuration, and troubleshooting guidance to explain UI behavior, supported tools, and recovery steps when review cards are missing.

UI and review flow

Layer / File(s)Summary
UI configuration and metadata contract
src/user-config.ts, src/config.ts, src/tool-surfaces/shared.ts, src/tool-surfaces/types.ts, src/config.test.ts
The configuration now uses ui.enabled, which defaults to true. Widget modes and widget-kind filtering were removed.
Review availability contract
src/review-checkpoints.ts, src/review-checkpoints.test.ts
Workspace initialization now returns review availability and reports diagnostic reasons when Git review support is unavailable.
Workspace tool integration
src/server.ts, src/server.test.ts, docs/...
open_workspace and show_changes are always available. open_workspace returns review availability. show_changes returns review summary and file data. Documentation describes the new UI behavior.
Direct tool registration
src/tool-surfaces/claude.ts, src/tool-surfaces/codex.ts
Claude and Codex file and command tools now use direct registration without widget metadata.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk:🟡 Moderate · up to 81ee2

The PR makes aggregate review available across tool modes, but hosts that ignore UI metadata still cannot inspect the aggregate diff. Merge should wait until the diff is included in the standard tool result; the documentation list should also be updated.

Poem

I’m a rabbit with a tidy UI,
Review cards now hop by.
Git roots tell what they can do,
show_changes brings patches through.
No widget modes to hide or flee—
Just clear config for you and me.

Greptile Summary

This PR makes aggregate change review available in both tool modes and limits companion UI descriptors to workspace opening and aggregate review. It also replaces widget modes with a persisted UI toggle and exposes review availability when opening a workspace.

  • Registers show_changes universally and initializes review checkpoints during workspace opening.
  • Adds review availability to the open_workspace result contract.
  • Removes per-tool application descriptors from ordinary read, mutation, and command tools.
  • Replaces DEVSPACE_WIDGETS modes with ui.enabled and updates documentation and tests.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR should not merge until existing DEVSPACE_WIDGETS=off deployments retain their disabled-UI behavior or receive an explicit migration failure.

The new configuration path silently defaults UI on when an existing deployment supplies only the previously supported DEVSPACE_WIDGETS=off environment override.

FilenameOverview
src/config.tsReplaces widget modes with uiEnabled but silently ignores the previous public DEVSPACE_WIDGETS override, reversing behavior for existing off configurations.
src/server.tsUniversally registers aggregate review, reports review availability during workspace opening, and limits UI descriptors to open_workspace and show_changes.
src/review-checkpoints.tsAdds an explicit availability result while preserving checkpoint initialization, fallback, concurrency, and root-binding behavior.
src/tool-surfaces/shared.tsReplaces per-tool widget selection with a focused workspace application descriptor controlled by uiEnabled.
src/tool-surfaces/claude.tsRegisters ordinary Claude-facing tools without application descriptors while preserving handlers and structured results.
src/tool-surfaces/codex.tsRegisters ordinary Codex-facing tools without application descriptors while preserving patch and process behavior.
src/user-config.tsAdds strict persisted validation for the new ui.enabled setting.
