Prompt: Suggest ways how we can prevent that a user accidentally adopts an existing bucket/topic when creating a buckety CR. Of course it might be a feature to allow intentional adopt, but the danger is that the user when they spot the mistake deletes the buckety and thereby deletes their content that existed before the CR create.

kubectl rejects a second rollout restart inside the same second
(the restartedAt annotation has 1s granularity). GHA runners are
slow enough to never hit it; a fast contributor machine fails
misconfigured-startup when the broken-config loop re-triggers
back to back (seen locally on the third variant). rollout_restart
retries briefly; all restart call sites go through it.
Also ships the adoption-scenario helpers this branch needs
(rpk_run/kafka_topic_create/produce/delete, gcs_bucket_create,
gcs_object_delete, wait_ready_reason, assert_provenance) and
ignores the driver-version rotation OCI layouts that local e2e
runs leave in the workspace.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The default resolved name is bare metadata.name, so a Buckety can
collide with a pre-existing bucket or topic; the drivers treated
'exists and reachable' as 'ours', which silently adopted foreign
data - and retentionPolicy=Delete then destroys content that
predates the CR when the user reaches for delete as the undo.
SPEC section 'Adoption' pins the contract: provenance
(Created/Adopted) frozen at first reconcile; AdoptEmpty default
that refuses non-empty resources with
Ready=False/BackendResourceExists and no Secret;
spec.adoption=Adopt as the explicit claim; and DeleteBuckety
running only for provenance=Created - adopted resources are
always retained, with out-of-band deletion as the path for
content an operator truly wants gone.
The examples/*/adoption scenario (SPEC scenario 11) exercises all
of it per driver: refused non-empty adopt, silent empty adopt,
explicit claim, retain-on-delete for adopted, normal delete for
created.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
registry.Driver gains InspectBuckety (exists? holds content?),
implemented for gcs (live objects only, list-403 degrades to
non-empty), s3 (current objects + noncurrent versions; delete
markers alone are not content; NotImplemented on the versions
listing means no versions to find) and kadm (any partition with
end offset > start offset; fully expired records count as none).
The reconciler runs the gate once, before the sticky stamp:
missing resource creates as before (provenance=Created); an
existing empty resource adopts silently; existing content
requires spec.adoption=Adopt and otherwise surfaces
Ready=False/BackendResourceExists without stamping anything or
minting a Secret. reconcileDelete never calls DeleteBuckety for
provenance=Adopted: retentionPolicy=Delete degrades to Retain
with a RetainedOnDelete event. Resources stamped before
provenance existed carry no value and keep the old behavior.

(Created/Adopted) frozen at first reconcile; AdoptEmpty default
that refuses non-empty resources with
Ready=False/BackendResourceExists and no Secret;
spec.adoption=Adopt as the explicit claim; and DeleteBuckety
running only for provenance=Created - adopted resources are
always retained, with out-of-band deletion as the path for
content an operator truly wants gone.
The examples/*/adoption scenario (SPEC scenario 11) exercises all
of it per driver: refused non-empty adopt, silent empty adopt,
explicit claim, retain-on-delete for adopted, normal delete for
created.

registry.Driver gains InspectBuckety (exists? holds content?),
implemented for gcs (live objects only, list-403 degrades to
non-empty), s3 (current objects + noncurrent versions; delete
markers alone are not content; NotImplemented on the versions
listing means no versions to find) and kadm (any partition with
end offset > start offset; fully expired records count as none).
The reconciler runs the gate once, before the sticky stamp:
missing resource creates as before (provenance=Created); an
existing empty resource adopts silently; existing content
requires spec.adoption=Adopt and otherwise surfaces
Ready=False/BackendResourceExists without stamping anything or
minting a Secret. reconcileDelete never calls DeleteBuckety for
provenance=Adopted: retentionPolicy=Delete degrades to Retain
with a RetainedOnDelete event. Resources stamped before
provenance existed carry no value and keep the old behavior.
