Summary

Fixes the storage correctness issues found during the Fresh 0.2.0 pluggable-storage review.

Changes

  • replace unbounded storage-ID loops with one shared 64-attempt allocator used by model creation, sync repair, and restore
  • propagate backend existence-query failures throughout internal persistence instead of treating them as presence or absence
  • remove the ambiguous internal boolean FreshFS.exists() overload
  • make copied FreshStorageAccess facades lifetime-safe with a backend-owned shared access state and weak facade references
  • detach retained facades before backend destruction and reject operations during shutdown
  • make identical normalized rename paths a successful no-op
  • remove destructive target deletion before replacement rename
  • preserve the source and previous destination when replacement rename fails
  • distinguish missing rename targets from stat() failures and reject file/directory type mismatches
  • make readFile() enforce complete-file semantics, report required capacity, detect early EOF, and reject size changes during reads
  • add deterministic regressions for persistent existence failures, facade lifetime, non-destructive rename, same-path rename, and undersized complete-file reads
  • document lifetime, rename, allocation, and complete-file guarantees

Validation

Passed on final head ea66dabf4389f24153691fd372cb6f494589cf91:

  • repository lint workflow
  • Arduino metadata lint
  • production source-boundary audit
  • version-consistency check
  • FRESH_TESTING hardening build with deterministic fault injection
  • Arduino CLI all-example builds for ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, and ESP32-P4
  • PIOArduino all-example builds for ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, and ESP32-P4

CI run: 30640121938

Remaining qualification

Before tagging v0.2.0, run the regression sketches and storage qualification on physical hardware, including:

  • LittleFS reboot persistence
  • managed and external SDSPI
  • SDMMC and eMMC configurations
  • absent, full, removed, and write-protected media
  • power interruption during journal, snapshot, manifest, backup, rename, and application-file operations

Changes

  • replace unbounded storage-ID loops with one shared 64-attempt allocator used by model creation, sync repair, and restore
  • propagate backend existence-query failures throughout internal persistence instead of treating them as presence or absence
  • remove the ambiguous internal boolean FreshFS.exists() overload
  • make copied FreshStorageAccess facades lifetime-safe with a backend-owned shared access state and weak facade references
  • detach retained facades before backend destruction and reject operations during shutdown
  • make identical normalized rename paths a successful no-op
  • remove destructive target deletion before replacement rename
  • preserve the source and previous destination when replacement rename fails
  • distinguish missing rename targets from stat() failures and reject file/directory type mismatches
  • make readFile() enforce complete-file semantics, report required capacity, detect early EOF, and reject size changes during reads
  • add deterministic regressions for persistent existence failures, facade lifetime, non-destructive rename, same-path rename, and undersized complete-file reads
  • document lifetime, rename, allocation, and complete-file guarantees

Validation

Passed on final head ea66dabf4389f24153691fd372cb6f494589cf91:

  • repository lint workflow
  • Arduino metadata lint
  • production source-boundary audit
  • version-consistency check
  • FRESH_TESTING hardening build with deterministic fault injection
  • Arduino CLI all-example builds for ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, and ESP32-P4
  • PIOArduino all-example builds for ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, and ESP32-P4

CI run: 30640121938

Remaining qualification

Before tagging v0.2.0, run the regression sketches and storage qualification on physical hardware, including:

  • LittleFS reboot persistence
  • managed and external SDSPI
  • SDMMC and eMMC configurations
  • absent, full, removed, and write-protected media
  • power interruption during journal, snapshot, manifest, backup, rename, and application-file operations
