On cefode branch, subsequent refreshes slower than initial load

When you first load cefode Atom in stable mode (not --dev), it takes about 1 second to load according to the timing that we log to the console. Subsequent refreshes take ~2.5 seconds. We've also noted that Node's require is quite a bit slower than Atom's original home-grown require in all cases.

I cannot reproduce this, here is my result after refreshing for some times:

I found this is related to the devtools, after toggling devtools, the load time increased to about 3s for me:

Node's require is a little different from Atom's original require, node's require uses C++ to compile and run module code, so you can easily debug them under devtools's Sources tab. While Atom's require used plain eval to compile module code, which are quite nasty for debugging.

To show and debug js files in devtools, the browser injected some code to the original page and told the devtools when you evaluated a script file, this makes the process of evaluating module code much slower. That's why devtools dragged down Atom's load time.

I'm afraid the increased load time is a must-pay debt for the debugging ability.

I'm going to close this since I was wrong about the source of the issue... I'm still not happy with the speed of our require. It's starting to feel like Rails-level slow to refresh the test suite. But I'll create another issue.

Actually... I'm realizing that without dev tools open, the performance is actually competitive with the non-node branch. But I do notice in a profile that we're spending a lot of time checking for the existence of files, especially in handling a URIError exception for files that don't exist. Is exception handling in V8 slow like it is in Ruby? If so, tweaking the behavior of require to do some kind of existence check that doesn't throw might help a little.
