VNC Linux - can't get it to work

I've installed the agent but can't get VNC to work on it. I've tried it on 2 different distros, Lubuntu and Linux Mint and I get the same error for both: Error while creating proxy session. I also tried connecting via my reverse proxy as well as directly on the network.

Did anyone get VNC on Linux to work?

The VNC feature relies on an existing VNC server accepting connections on localhost. The traffic gets tunneled over websockets from browser to server to agent, then over TCP from the agent to the local VNC server.

You can control the port to which the agent will forward traffic by updating the VncPort property in /etc/controlr/{host}/appsettings.json.

If I recall correctly, you need to explicitly tell most vnc servers to listen on localhost/loopback.

Got it, thanks. I was hoping it'd be something more akin to what Remotely offered bundled with the client.

@tlhonmey I can't say without seeing the logs, but you could be running into this if you're proxying through Cloudflare.

If that's the case, you'll need to bypass the Cloudflare cache until the next release. I've already reworked the agent auto-update and desktop client installation process so it doesn't use the headers that Cloudflare cache is stripping, and it'll be included in the next release.

Nope, not running it behind cloudflare. I had to deliver that system though, so you'll have to wait until the next time I'm setting up Linux for somebody for me to get logs for you. If it's still an issue by then.

I had planned to move this over to the "device access" page and improve the implementation, but I'm honestly not sure now if I'm going to keep shipping noVNC.

One of the previous iterations of ControlR was a MAUI native app, and I really liked being able to launch a native VNC/RDP client.

I have some ideas cooking, but it's too early to comment on them yet. 🙂

Right now, I'm working on a lot of foundational stuff and behind-the-scenes infrastructure. But after that, I want to get more engaged with the community and get some surveys going about what features will provide the most value. Most of the feature work will be driven by votes, and the highest-voted issues will float to the top.

Ultimately, I want to turn this into full-featured product. I have a clear vision and solid plan now, something I never had with Remotely. And I'm committing to it 100%!
