Chaning the width of bars with datetime x-axis?

I have a graph which is linear on the y-axis and datetime on the x-axis. The majority of data is represented nicely with the line chart type, but some data will need to use the bar chart type. The example in the above jsfiddle shows timestamps every 15 minutes, with the bar chart showing data for each of these. My question is, is it possible to change the width of these bars? I'm not sure what is controlling the space between them, or why there is a space between them at all? I'm aware of categorySpacing and categoryPercentage, but neither of these appear to have any effect? Is there something I'm missing?

@ed-parry those settings only work the 'category' scale on the x axis. There are a bunch of issues open related to bars and time axes. Unfortunately, there is no good single solution at the moment. The category scale works well because the distance between grid lines is constant and bars need to fill that space. In the time scale, this is not the case and it means that bars could very well overlap because they are too close together.
