@clerk/backend 2.6.0 requires Node.js 22+ due to snakecase-keys@9.0.2, breaking Node.js 18 compatibility #6419

Description

@MalekBouba

Bug Report

Description

When building the project with Node.js 18.20.8, I encountered a compatibility error with snakecase-keys@9.0.2, which is a dependency of @clerk/backend@2.6.0. The error indicates that snakecase-keys@9.0.2 requires Node.js 22 or higher, but the project is running on Node.js 18.20.8.
PS: in backend/README.md you reared that 18 is still supported.

Impact

This issue is particularly problematic for users of Azure Static Web Apps, which currently uses Node.js 18 by default. Many developers, including myself, are unable to upgrade the Node.js version in this environment, making it impossible to use the latest version of @clerk/backend.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Use Node.js 18.20.8 (default on Azure Static Web Apps)
  2. Install dependencies with yarn install or npm install
  3. Run the build command

Expected Behavior

The build should complete successfully on Node.js 18.x, which is still in maintenance LTS until April 2025.

Actual Behavior

Build fails with the following error:

Environment

  • @clerk/backend version: 2.6.0
  • Node.js version: 18.20.8
  • Package manager: Yarn

Reproduction

Just install latest version of "@clerk/nextjs" on a node 18 project.
You'll had to revert back to 6.19.2.

Publishable key

Possible Solution

Please consider one of the following:

  1. Downgrade the snakecase-keys dependency in @clerk/backend to a version that supports Node.js 18
  2. Provide a workaround for users who need to stay on Node.js 18

Additional Context

This is blocking our ability to build the project without upgrading Node.js, which may not be feasible for all users due to various constraints.

                      Bug Report

                      Description

When building the project with Node.js 18.20.8, I encountered a compatibility error with snakecase-keys@9.0.2, which is a dependency of @clerk/backend@2.6.0. The error indicates that snakecase-keys@9.0.2 requires Node.js 22 or higher, but the project is running on Node.js 18.20.8.
PS: in backend/README.md you reared that 18 is still supported.

                      Impact

This issue is particularly problematic for users of Azure Static Web Apps, which currently uses Node.js 18 by default. Many developers, including myself, are unable to upgrade the Node.js version in this environment, making it impossible to use the latest version of @clerk/backend.

                      Steps to Reproduce

                      1. Use Node.js 18.20.8 (default on Azure Static Web Apps)
                      2. Install dependencies with yarn install or npm install
                      3. Run the build command

                      Expected Behavior

The build should complete successfully on Node.js 18.x, which is still in maintenance LTS until April 2025.

                      Actual Behavior

Build fails with the following error:

                      Environment

                      • @clerk/backend version: 2.6.0
                      • Node.js version: 18.20.8
                      • Package manager: Yarn

                      Reproduction

Just install latest version of "@clerk/nextjs" on a node 18 project.
You'll had to revert back to 6.19.2.
