Description

This builds on (and branch is currently targeted at) the new lint rule: #8704

We don't want this lint rule to autofix violations, since that changes runtime behavior. Adding await auth.protect() to a file on save would not be a great experience. Also, maintaining a separate codemod would mean a lot of duplication, or cross-package complexity.

What this PR does instead is:

  • Adds a eslint "suggestion" to the missing auth protect violation
    • Just like with autofix, this is provided via a "fixer", but instead of fixing automatically, it powers the manual "Quick Fix" in IDEs
    • Adds await auth.protect() at the top of the function (or adds .protect() if await auth() is already at the top)
    • Adds async keyword to the function if necessary
    • Adds auth import if necessary
  • Adds a fixAuthProtection() function and entrypoint that can be called to programmatically fix all violations
    • We can use this to implement a codemod, or support in the Clerk CLI later on
  • Uses ☝️ to power a npx clerk-next-fix-auth-protection command

The CLI makes it clear this changes runtime behavior and you need to review and test your code properly after running the command. It returns 0 if any violations could not be fixed and requires manual intervention. It has a --dry-run option.

Description
This builds on (and branch is currently targeted at) the new lint rule: #8704
We don't want this lint rule to autofix violations, since that changes runtime behavior. Adding await auth.protect() to a file on save would not be a great experience. Also, maintaining a separate codemod would mean a lot of duplication, or cross-package complexity.
What this PR does instead is:
  • Adds a eslint "suggestion" to the missing auth protect violation

    • Just like with autofix, this is provided via a "fixer", but instead of fixing automatically, it powers the manual "Quick Fix" in IDEs
    • Adds await auth.protect() at the top of the function (or adds .protect() if await auth() is already at the top)
    • Adds async keyword to the function if necessary
    • Adds auth import if necessary

Description
This builds on (and branch is currently targeted at) the new lint rule: #8704
We don't want this lint rule to autofix violations, since that changes runtime behavior. Adding await auth.protect() to a file on save would not be a great experience. Also, maintaining a separate codemod would mean a lot of duplication, or cross-package complexity.
What this PR does instead is:
  • Adds a eslint "suggestion" to the missing auth protect violation

    • Just like with autofix, this is provided via a "fixer", but instead of fixing automatically, it powers the manual "Quick Fix" in IDEs
    • Adds await auth.protect() at the top of the function (or adds .protect() if await auth() is already at the top)
    • Adds async keyword to the function if necessary
    • Adds auth import if necessary
  • Adds a fixAuthProtection() function and entrypoint that can be called to programmatically fix all violations

    • We can use this to implement a codemod, or support in the Clerk CLI later on
  • Uses ☝️ to power a npx clerk-next-fix-auth-protection command
The CLI makes it clear this changes runtime behavior and you need to review and test your code properly after running the command. It returns 0 if any violations could not be fixed and requires manual intervention. It has a --dry-run option.
