Configuration authentication through credentials not working

Running under Rails 8.1.3.

When I try to configure authentication through credentials, it fails.

Example:

flightdeck:
 username: jobs
 password: jobs

The error stems from

The credentials at Rails.application.credentials.flightdeck is an instance of the class ActiveSupport::OrderedOptions, which responds to call but returns nil.

Current workaround is to configure the initializer config/initializers/flightdeck.rb as

Flightdeck.configure do |config|
 fd = Rails.application.credentials.flightdeck
 config.http_basic = { username: fd.username, password: fd.password }
end
