Summary

The StreamTurnIterator::next() implementation panics on I/O errors instead of returning an error value. This crashes the entire bugatti process during live test execution, leaving any running child services orphaned.

Severity: S2 (Medium) | Confidence: 0.85 | Blast radius: High — an I/O error during any test step causes total process crash with no cleanup.

Technical Details

// src/claude_code.rs:664Err(e) => panic!("unexpected error: {e}")

In the Iterator implementation for StreamTurnIterator, any std::io::Error from the underlying BufReader triggers a panic!. This is problematic because:

  • I/O errors are expected failure modes (broken pipe, connection reset, disk full)
  • The panic unwinds past the executor's step loop, bypassing teardown_processes() in command.rs:525
  • Long-lived services spawned via spawn_long_lived_commands have no Drop impl, so they become orphaned
  • The error message gives no context about which test step or provider was active

Proposed Fix

  1. Change the Err(e) arm to return Some(Err(ProviderError::Io(e))) or equivalent error variant
  2. Ensure the caller (execute_steps in executor.rs) handles the error gracefully and triggers teardown

                              In the Iterator implementation for StreamTurnIterator, any std::io::Error from the underlying BufReader triggers a panic!. This is problematic because:

                              • I/O errors are expected failure modes (broken pipe, connection reset, disk full)
                              • The panic unwinds past the executor's step loop, bypassing teardown_processes() in command.rs:525
                              • Long-lived services spawned via spawn_long_lived_commands have no Drop impl, so they become orphaned
                              • The error message gives no context about which test step or provider was active

                              Proposed Fix

                              1. Change the Err(e) arm to return Some(Err(ProviderError::Io(e))) or equivalent error variant
                              2. Ensure the caller (execute_steps in executor.rs) handles the error gracefully and triggers teardown
                              3. Add a test that simulates a broken pipe during streaming to verify error propagation
