Add a new data fetching script for OTL (Open Textbook Library) Education resources to expand our commons quantification coverage in the education sector.

Motivation

The Open Textbook Library represents a significant collection of openly licensed educational materials that should be included in our commons quantification efforts. This aligns with the project's goal of measuring the size and diversity of openly licensed works across different domains.

Proposed Implementation

Phase 1: Data Fetching Script
Create 'OTL_education_read.py' in 'scripts/1-fetch/' with the following requirements:

  • Follow existing project patterns for data fetching
  • Ensure compliance with the project's code style guidelines
  • Include appropriate error handling and logging
  • Output data to CSV format in 'data/2025Q4/1-fetch' following project standards

Phase 2: Data Processing Script

Develop 'OTL_education_process.py' in 'scripts/2-process/' to:

  • Clean and normalize the fetched OTL data
  • Transform data into the required format for analysis (if recommended)
  • Generate intermediate datasets as needed

Phase 3: Reporting & Visualization

Create 'OTL_education_report.py' in 'scripts/3-report/' to:

  • Generate statistical summaries of OTL education resources
  • Create data visualizations including:
    • Distribution of resource types
    • Licensing breakdown
    • Subject area coverage
  • Export visualizations in appropriate formats (PNG, SVG)

Add OTL (Open Texbook Library) Education data source fetch script #165

Add a new data fetching script for OTL (Open Textbook Library) Education resources to expand our commons quantification coverage in the education sector.

Motivation

The Open Textbook Library represents a significant collection of openly licensed educational materials that should be included in our commons quantification efforts. This aligns with the project's goal of measuring the size and diversity of openly licensed works across different domains.

Proposed Implementation

Phase 1: Data Fetching Script
Create 'OTL_education_read.py' in 'scripts/1-fetch/' with the following requirements:

  • Follow existing project patterns for data fetching
  • Ensure compliance with the project's code style guidelines
  • Include appropriate error handling and logging
  • Output data to CSV format in 'data/2025Q4/1-fetch' following project standards

Phase 2: Data Processing Script

Develop 'OTL_education_process.py' in 'scripts/2-process/' to:

  • Clean and normalize the fetched OTL data
  • Transform data into the required format for analysis (if recommended)
  • Generate intermediate datasets as needed

Phase 3: Reporting & Visualization

Create 'OTL_education_report.py' in 'scripts/3-report/' to:

  • Generate statistical summaries of OTL education resources
  • Create data visualizations including:
    • Distribution of resource types
    • Licensing breakdown
    • Subject area coverage
  • Export visualizations in appropriate formats (PNG, SVG)
  • Update or create README.md with:
    • Script usage instructions

Acceptance Criteria

Phase 1 - Fetching

  • Script successfully fetches OTL education data
  • Output follows project CSV format standards
  • Code passes static analysis checks (black, flake8, isort)
  • Script includes proper documentation and comments
  • Error handling covers common failure scenarios

Immediate: Implement data fetching script (OTL_education_read.py)
After Phase 1: Develop processing script for data transformation
After Phase 2: Create reporting script with visualizations and comprehensive documentation
Final: Review integration with quarterly report generation pipeline
