Installers often rewrite open and icon together, so LibreOffice (and friends) can replace Office icons when they claim a type. Windows already keeps those jobs on separate tracks (shell\open\command vs DefaultIcon vs thumbnail ShellEx). Switchyard is the yard that watches the points: snapshot associations, notice hijacks, lock icons, restore what you chose — and later, optional smarter open routing without becoming a rude global default handler.
Switchyard — product / brand (rail-yard metaphor: sort association tracks).
File router — debranded role name for “send this file intent to the right handler.”
App broker — role name for mediating between Shell intents and apps (crowded on Windows; use sparingly in prose, fine in architecture talk).
SwitchBitch — easter egg / affectionate misnomer (
switchyard help). Not the product name.
Depth lives in PLAN.adoc and docs/ as the product grows.
