Why This Exists

Every year, thousands of students apply to open-source programs like Google Summer of Code, LFX Mentorship, and Summer of Bitcoin. The #1 question they all have:

"What does a successful proposal actually look like?"

This repository answers that. We've collected 265+ real proposals that were accepted into these programs, organized cleanly so you can find exactly what you need.

Note: Some organizations have a _rejected/ subfolder with unsuccessful proposals — these are included for learning purposes. A few older years (2015–2019) have _proposal-links/ folders containing markdown files with links to externally hosted proposals.

Adding your proposal takes 2 minutes:

  1. Fork this repo
  2. Add your proposal PDF to the right folder: Program/Year/Organization/
  3. Name your file: Organization - Year - Your Name.pdf
  4. Open a Pull Request

💡 Tips for Writing a Great Proposal

After reviewing hundreds of proposals, here are patterns that successful ones share:

  1. Be specific — Don't just say "I'll improve X." Explain exactly what you'll change, how, and why.
  2. Show you understand the codebase — Reference specific files, functions, or PRs.
  3. Create a realistic timeline — Break work into weekly milestones with deliverables.
  4. Address edge cases — Show you've thought about what could go wrong.
  5. Demonstrate prior contributions — Link to your merged PRs in the organization.
  6. Keep it concise — 8–15 pages is the sweet spot. Reviewers read dozens of proposals.
