dep: fix deprecated function usage in examples

Fixed all the deprecation warnings in the examples. Ran all examples and everything ran as expected.

Also updated pre-commit hooks to the latest

Yes! Looks good but it is failing tests in CI. I remember this fair from before but I don't remember the fix
