When pytest is installed and no special flags are passed, the script delegates to pytest (standard exit codes). Otherwise the built-in standalone runner is used (exit code = failed check count, capped at 125).

Summary

When pytest is installed and no special flags are passed, the script delegates to pytest (standard exit codes). Otherwise the built-in standalone runner is used (exit code = failed check count, capped at 125).
