Security: should cli support a credential helper instead of plaintext token storage? #51

Context: we built our own CLI around the Omni API about 3-4 months ago and are planning to transition the non-Mon-Ami-specific parts onto this CLI as it matures. We have very specific to us variants of this (the secrets managers we use), but I suspect all would benefit from avoiding environment variables/free text storage in files, where possible.

Today the API token is sourced from either OMNI_API_TOKEN or plaintext at ~/.config/omni-cli/config.json. In agent / AI-coding workflows, a prompt-injected command can read the environment or that file and exfiltrate the token.

Possible shapes (any one would help):

  • macOS Keychain / Linux Secret Service / Windows Credential Manager integration
  • A credential-helper protocol (à la git credential.helper) that shells out to e.g. op read, pass, or a custom binary
  • --token-command flag that runs an arbitrary command and reads the token from stdout

Value: removes the highest-leverage token exfiltration path without forcing users to give up scripting ergonomics.
