flexoki for forgejo

a port of flexoki, the inky color scheme for prose and code by steph ango, to forgejo

also works with gitea

flexoki is inspired by analog printing inks and warm shades of paper. this port maps the full flexoki extended palette onto forgejo's css variable system, including diff views, ci console output, ansi colors, and chroma syntax highlighting.

Note

three variants are included:

  • flexoki-dark — black/base-950 surfaces, 400-series accents
  • flexoki-light — paper/base-50 surfaces, 600-series accents
  • flexoki-auto — follows the os prefers-color-scheme

installation

tested against forgejo v7.0+ (any version using css variable theming).

  1. copy the theme files into your custom directory (create it if needed):

    # bare metal (adjust to your custompath, see site administration -> configuration)
mkdir -p /var/lib/forgejo/custom/public/assets/css cp css/theme-flexoki-*.css /var/lib/forgejo/custom/public/assets/css/ # docker: the custom dir lives under the data mount cp css/theme-flexoki-*.css <data>/gitea/public/assets/css/
  2. register the themes in app.ini (or the equivalent forgejo__ui__* environment variables):

    [ui]themes = forgejo-auto,forgejo-light,forgejo-dark,flexoki-auto,flexoki-light,flexoki-dark ;default_theme = flexoki-dark
  3. restart forgejo, then pick the theme under settings → appearance.

Note

design notes

  • each theme @imports the corresponding built-in forgejo theme and overrides variables, so it inherits sane defaults for anything forgejo adds in future releases rather than breaking.
  • surfaces follow the flexoki spec: dark uses base-950 for the page and black for recessed panels (code, inputs, nav); light uses paper with base-50 headers.
  • syntax highlighting follows the flexoki code mapping: keywords green, functions orange, strings cyan, constants purple, variables blue, types yellow, comments muted.
  • the actions console stays inky-dark in both variants, using the flexoki dark ansi set.

site-local branding

local/ contains an optional, git-ignored overlay for instance-specific branding (company accent color, fonts, logo/favicon paths). see local/readme.md. the stock css/ files contain no site-specific content and are safe to submit upstream as-is.

attribution & license

mit, same as flexoki. colors and design by steph ango — per the flexoki contribution guidelines, this port includes attribution and a link to https://stephango.com/flexoki.

flexoki for forgejo

a port of flexoki, the inky color scheme for prose and code by steph ango, to forgejo

also works with gitea

flexoki is inspired by analog printing inks and warm shades of paper. this port maps the full flexoki extended palette onto forgejo's css variable system, including diff views, ci console output, ansi colors, and chroma syntax highlighting.

Note

three variants are included:

  • flexoki-dark — black/base-950 surfaces, 400-series accents
  • flexoki-light — paper/base-50 surfaces, 600-series accents
  • flexoki-auto — follows the os prefers-color-scheme

installation

tested against forgejo v7.0+ (any version using css variable theming).

  1. copy the theme files into your custom directory (create it if needed):

    # bare metal (adjust to your custompath, see site administration -> configuration)
mkdir -p /var/lib/forgejo/custom/public/assets/css cp css/theme-flexoki-*.css /var/lib/forgejo/custom/public/assets/css/ # docker: the custom dir lives under the data mount cp css/theme-flexoki-*.css <data>/gitea/public/assets/css/
  2. register the themes in app.ini (or the equivalent forgejo__ui__* environment variables):

    [ui]themes = forgejo-auto,forgejo-light,forgejo-dark,flexoki-auto,flexoki-light,flexoki-dark ;default_theme = flexoki-dark
  3. restart forgejo, then pick the theme under settings → appearance.

Note

design notes
