I'll need to remove the imcompatible tests #10332 first (trivial change) so that the unit tests can pass here (the same unit tests were run internally and did pass)

The first PR is now blocked by some internal decision on whether we should use @BetaApi to indicate preview features. I'll inform here as soon as possible on the decision (or if we couldn't make the decision soon!)
