Rebalancing logic #2

Description

@benthecarman

This is the diagram I created that attempts to summarize how I think the logic for where funds should go given a set of circumstances.

Image

Not in diagram for brevity:

  • If we have enough inbound capacity, goes to LN
  • If we have a trusted balance below our trusted_balance_limit but we have inbound capacity, withdraw to use it all

The key points here being:

  • Given our trusted_balance_limit we decide where a LN payment should go.
  • Given our trusted_balance_limit we decide when to sweep to our first LN channel.
    • Not encapsulated in the diagram, but when we will sweep to our channel any trusted balance over rebalance_min
  • After we experience a force close, we disable rebalancing until the user re-enables it.
    • This is important because otherwise we will likely immediately just re-open the channel with the same LSP which the user/dev may not want.
  • Given our onchain_receive_threshold we decide if we sweep force closes to our trusted wallet or on-chain wallet
    • We decide which wallet to sweep to because the user may have a very large channel and don't want to have it all move into a trusted wallet.

Cooperative Closes

If the LSP wants to initiate a cooperative close of the channel, they can use LSPS5 to send a expiry_soon event indicating they want to close the channel by given block height. The wallet should come online to cooperatively close before this time. Before the cooperative close the wallet has the option to withdraw its funds to the trusted wallet or to just mutual close to an on-chain address which should be done based on the onchain_receive_threshold.

If the configured trusted wallet supports on-chain, it may be more beneficial have the mutual close just go into the trusted wallet through there, this would ensure there is no left overs with channel reserves and could save on LN routing fees, however it comes with the trade off as the user's funds may be in limbo for a few blocks.

Todo

  • 3rd party payment flows
  • Rebalance from trusted to LN
  • Rebalance from onchain to LN
    • Onchain events
  • Force close handling
  • Cooperative close
    • User coop close
    • LSP coop close (requires LSPS5)

Rebalancing logic #2

Description

@benthecarman

Todo

  • Rebalance from onchain to LN
    • Onchain events
