Test case: 2 threads write short inline data to a file.
In ext4_page_mkwrite the resulting inline data is converted.
Handling ext4_grp_locked_error with description "block bitmap
and bg descriptor inconsistent: X vs Y free clusters" calls
ext4_force_shutdown. The conversion clears
EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA but fails for
ext4_destroy_inline_data_nolock and ext4_mark_iloc_dirty due
to ext4_forced_shutdown. The restoration of inline data fails
for the same reason not setting EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA.
Without the flag set a regular process path in ext4_da_write_end
follows trying to dereference page folio private pointer that has
not been set. The fix calls early return with -EIO error shall the
pointer to private be NULL.
Sample crash report:

-> 2) context must be preempt by IO interrupt to trigger deadlock.
As shown above, the deadlock is not possible in theory, but the warning
still need to be fixed.
Fix it by using spin_lock_irqsave to get lockB instead of spin_lock_irq.

[ Upstream commit c3a5e3e ]
When using cachefiles, lockdep may emit something similar to the circular
locking dependency notice below. The problem appears to stem from the
following:
(1) Cachefiles manipulates xattrs on the files in its cache when called
from ->writepages().
(2) The setxattr() and removexattr() system call handlers get the name
(and value) from userspace after taking the sb_writers lock, putting
accesses of the vma->vm_lock and mm->mmap_lock inside of that.
(3) The afs filesystem uses a per-inode lock to prevent multiple
revalidation RPCs and in writeback vs truncate to prevent parallel
operations from deadlocking against the server on one side and local
page locks on the other.
Fix this by moving the getting of the name and value in {get,remove}xattr()
outside of the sb_writers lock. This also has the minor benefits that we
don't need to reget these in the event of a retry and we never try to take
the sb_writers lock in the event we can't pull the name and value into the
kernel.
Alternative approaches that might fix this include moving the dispatch of a
write to the cache off to a workqueue or trying to do without the
validation lock in afs. Note that this might also affect other filesystems
that use netfslib and/or cachefiles.

%pS and %pK, in the same back trace line, are redundant, and %pS can void
%pK service in certain contexts.
%pS alone already provides the necessary information, and if it cannot
resolve the symbol, it falls back to printing the raw address voiding
the original intent behind the %pK.
Additionally, %pK requires a privilege check CAP_SYSLOG enforced through
the LSM, which can trigger a "sleeping function called from invalid
context" warning under RT_PREEMPT kernels when the check occurs in an
atomic context. This issue may also affect other LSMs.
This change avoids the unnecessary privilege check and resolves the
sleeping function warning without any loss of information.

In allow_direct_reclaim(), while processing ZONE_DMA32, the sum of
inactive/active file-backed pages calculated in zone_reclaimable_pages()
based on the result of zone_page_state_snapshot() is zero.
Additionally, since this system lacks swap, the calculation of inactive/
active anonymous pages is skipped.
crash> p nr_swap_pages
nr_swap_pages = $1937 = {
counter = 0
}
As a result, ZONE_DMA32 is deemed unreclaimable and skipped, moving on to
the processing of the next zone, ZONE_NORMAL, despite ZONE_DMA32 having
free pages significantly exceeding the high watermark.
The problem is that the pgdat->kswapd_failures hasn't been incremented.
crash> px ((struct pglist_data *) 0xffff00817fffe540)->kswapd_failures
$1935 = 0x0
This is because the node deemed balanced. The node balancing logic in
balance_pgdat() evaluates all zones collectively. If one or more zones
(e.g., ZONE_DMA32) have enough free pages to meet their watermarks, the
entire node is deemed balanced. This causes balance_pgdat() to exit early
before incrementing the kswapd_failures, as it considers the overall
memory state acceptable, even though some zones (like ZONE_NORMAL) remain
under significant pressure.
The patch ensures that zone_reclaimable_pages() includes free pages
(NR_FREE_PAGES) in its calculation when no other reclaimable pages are
available (e.g., file-backed or anonymous pages). This change prevents
zones like ZONE_DMA32, which have sufficient free pages, from being
mistakenly deemed unreclaimable. By doing so, the patch ensures proper
node balancing, avoids masking pressure on other zones like ZONE_NORMAL,
and prevents infinite loops in throttle_direct_reclaim() caused by
allow_direct_reclaim(pgdat) repeatedly returning false.
The kernel hangs due to a task stuck in throttle_direct_reclaim(), caused
by a node being incorrectly deemed balanced despite pressure in certain
zones, such as ZONE_NORMAL. This issue arises from
zone_reclaimable_pages() returning 0 for zones without reclaimable file-
backed or anonymous pages, causing zones like ZONE_DMA32 with sufficient
free pages to be skipped.
The lack of swap or reclaimable pages results in ZONE_DMA32 being ignored
during reclaim, masking pressure in other zones. Consequently,
pgdat->kswapd_failures remains 0 in balance_pgdat(), preventing fallback
mechanisms in allow_direct_reclaim() from being triggered, leading to an
infinite loop in throttle_direct_reclaim().
This patch modifies zone_reclaimable_pages() to account for free pages
(NR_FREE_PAGES) when no other reclaimable pages exist. This ensures zones
with sufficient free pages are not skipped, enabling proper balancing and
reclaim behavior.

The existing code move the VF NIC to new namespace when NETDEV_REGISTER is
received on netvsc NIC. During deletion of the namespace,
default_device_exit_batch() >> default_device_exit_net() is called. When
netvsc NIC is moved back and registered to the default namespace, it
automatically brings VF NIC back to the default namespace. This will cause
the default_device_exit_net() >> for_each_netdev_safe loop unable to detect
the list end, and hit NULL ptr:

commit 0379eb8 upstream.
A malicious HID device can trigger a slab out-of-bounds during
mt_report_fixup() by passing in report descriptor smaller than
607 bytes. mt_report_fixup() attempts to patch byte offset 607
of the descriptor with 0x25 by first checking if byte offset
607 is 0x15 however it lacks bounds checks to verify if the
descriptor is big enough before conducting this check. Fix
this bug by ensuring the descriptor size is at least 608
bytes before accessing it.
Below is the KASAN splat after the out of bounds access happens:

When the "proxy" option is enabled on a VXLAN device, the device will
suppress ARP requests and IPv6 Neighbor Solicitation messages if it is
able to reply on behalf of the remote host. That is, if a matching and
valid neighbor entry is configured on the VXLAN device whose MAC address
is not behind the "any" remote (0.0.0.0 / ::).
The code currently assumes that the FDB entry for the neighbor's MAC
address points to a valid remote destination, but this is incorrect if
the entry is associated with an FDB nexthop group. This can result in a
NPD [1][3] which can be reproduced using [2][4].
Fix by checking that the remote destination exists before dereferencing
it.

[ Upstream commit 8b0e697 ]
We sometimes observe use-after-free when dereferencing a neighbour [1].
The problem seems to be that the driver stores a pointer to the
neighbour, but without holding a reference on it. A reference is only
taken when the neighbour is used by a nexthop.
Fix by simplifying the reference counting scheme. Always take a
reference when storing a neighbour pointer in a neighbour entry. Avoid
taking a referencing when the neighbour is used by a nexthop as the
neighbour entry associated with the nexthop already holds a reference.
Tested by running the test that uncovered the problem over 300 times.
Without this patch the problem was reproduced after a handful of

commit 9935df5 upstream.
Reject attempts to disable KVM_MEM_GUEST_MEMFD on a memslot that was
initially created with a guest_memfd binding, as KVM doesn't support
toggling KVM_MEM_GUEST_MEMFD on existing memslots. KVM prevents enabling
KVM_MEM_GUEST_MEMFD, but doesn't prevent clearing the flag.
Failure to reject the new memslot results in a use-after-free due to KVM
not unbinding from the guest_memfd instance. Unbinding on a FLAGS_ONLY
change is easy enough, and can/will be done as a hardening measure (in
anticipation of KVM supporting dirty logging on guest_memfd at some point),
but fixing the use-after-free would only address the immediate symptom.

Notably, invoking the mog_init_rings() callback upon link establishment
is unnecessary. Instead, we can exclusively call mog_init_rings() within
the ndo_open() callback. This adjustment resolves the deadlock issue.
Furthermore, since MACB_CAPS_MACB_IS_EMAC cases do not use mog_init_rings()
when opening the network interface via at91ether_open(), moving
mog_init_rings() to macb_open() also eliminates the MACB_CAPS_MACB_IS_EMAC
check.

lranders pushed a commit to lranders/linux4microchip-linux that referenced this pull request Apr 27, 2026
[ Upstream commit d935187 ]
A potential circular locking dependency (ABBA deadlock) exists between
`ec_dev->lock` and the clock framework's `prepare_lock`.
The first order (A -> B) occurs when scp_ipi_send() is called while
`ec_dev->lock` is held (e.g., within cros_ec_cmd_xfer()):
1. cros_ec_cmd_xfer() acquires `ec_dev->lock` and calls scp_ipi_send().
2. scp_ipi_send() calls clk_prepare_enable(), which acquires
`prepare_lock`.
See #0 in the following example calling trace.
(Lock Order: `ec_dev->lock` -> `prepare_lock`)
The reverse order (B -> A) is more complex and has been observed
(learned) by lockdep. It involves the clock prepare operation
triggering power domain changes, which then propagates through sysfs
and power supply uevents, eventually calling back into the ChromeOS EC
driver and attempting to acquire `ec_dev->lock`:
1. Something calls clk_prepare(), which acquires `prepare_lock`. It
then triggers genpd operations like genpd_runtime_resume(), which
takes `&genpd->mlock`.
2. Power domain changes can trigger regulator changes; regulator
changes can then trigger device link changes; device link changes
can then trigger sysfs changes. Eventually, power_supply_uevent()
is called.
3. This leads to calls like cros_usbpd_charger_get_prop(), which calls
cros_ec_cmd_xfer_status(), which then attempts to acquire
`ec_dev->lock`.
See linux4microchip#1 ~ linux4microchip#6 in the following example calling trace.
(Lock Order: `prepare_lock` -> `&genpd->mlock` -> ... -> `&ec_dev->lock`)
Move the clk_prepare()/clk_unprepare() operations for `scp->clk` to the
remoteproc prepare()/unprepare() callbacks. This ensures `prepare_lock`
is only acquired in prepare()/unprepare() callbacks. Since
`ec_dev->lock` is not involved in the callbacks, the dependency loop is
broken.
This means the clock is always "prepared" when the SCP is running. The
prolonged "prepared time" for the clock should be acceptable as SCP is
designed to be a very power efficient processor. The power consumption
impact can be negligible.

Commit bf454ec ("kexec_file: allow to place kexec_buf randomly")
introduced the kexec_buf->random field to enable random placement of
kexec_buf.
However, this field was never properly initialized for kexec images
that do not need to be placed randomly, leading to the following UBSAN

[ Upstream commit 51c0996 ]
Previously, it was possible for a PCI device to be runtime-suspended before
it was fully initialized. When that happened, the suspend process could
save invalid device state, for example, before BAR assignment. Restoring
the invalid state during resume may leave the device non-functional.
Prevent runtime suspend for PCI devices until they are fully initialized by
deferring pm_runtime_enable().
More details on how exactly this may occur:
1. PCI device is created by pci_scan_slot() or similar
2. As part of pci_scan_slot(), pci_pm_init() puts the device in D0 and
prevents runtime suspend prevented via pm_runtime_forbid()
3. pci_device_add() adds the underlying 'struct device' via device_add(),
which means user space can allow runtime suspend, e.g.,
echo auto > /sys/bus/pci/devices/.../power/control
4. PCI device receives BAR configuration
(pci_assign_unassigned_bus_resources(), etc.)
5. pci_bus_add_device() applies final fixups, saves device state, and
tries to attach a driver
The device may potentially be suspended between linux4microchip#3 and linux4microchip#5, so this is racy
with user space (udev or similar).
Many PCI devices are enumerated at subsys_initcall time and so will not
race with user space, but devices created later by hotplug or modular
pwrctrl or host controller drivers are susceptible to this race.

Add SRCU read-side protection when reading PDPTR registers in
__get_sregs2().
Reading PDPTRs may trigger access to guest memory:
kvm_pdptr_read() -> svm_cache_reg() -> load_pdptrs() ->
kvm_vcpu_read_guest_page() -> kvm_vcpu_gfn_to_memslot()
kvm_vcpu_gfn_to_memslot() dereferences memslots via __kvm_memslots(),
which uses srcu_dereference_check() and requires either kvm->srcu or
kvm->slots_lock to be held. Currently only vcpu->mutex is held,

ice_reset_all_vfs() ignores the return value of ice_vf_rebuild_vsi().
When the VSI rebuild fails (e.g. during NVM firmware update via
nvmupdate64e), ice_vsi_rebuild() tears down the VSI on its error path,
leaving txq_map and rxq_map as NULL. The subsequent unconditional call
to ice_vf_post_vsi_rebuild() leads to a NULL pointer dereference in
ice_ena_vf_q_mappings() when it accesses vsi->txq_map[0].
The single-VF reset path in ice_reset_vf() already handles this
correctly by checking the return value of ice_vf_reconfig_vsi() and
skipping ice_vf_post_vsi_rebuild() on failure.
Apply the same pattern to ice_reset_all_vfs(): check the return value
of ice_vf_rebuild_vsi() and skip ice_vf_post_vsi_rebuild() and
ice_eswitch_attach_vf() on failure. The VF is left safely disabled
(ICE_VF_STATE_INIT not set, VFGEN_RSTAT not set to VFACTIVE) and can
be recovered via a VFLR triggered by a PCI reset of the VF
(sysfs reset or driver rebind).
Note that this patch does not prevent the VF VSI rebuild from failing
during NVM update — the underlying cause is firmware being in a
transitional state while the EMP reset is processed, which can cause
Admin Queue commands (ice_add_vsi, ice_cfg_vsi_lan) to fail. This
patch only prevents the subsequent NULL pointer dereference that
crashes the kernel when the rebuild does fail.

Commit d93231a ("ceph: prevent a client from exceeding the MDS
maximum xattr size") moved the required_blob_size computation to before
the __build_xattrs() call, introducing a race.
__build_xattrs() releases and reacquires i_ceph_lock during execution.
In that window, handle_cap_grant() may update i_xattrs.blob with a
newer MDS-provided blob and bump i_xattrs.version. When
__build_xattrs() detects that index_version < version, it destroys and
rebuilds the entire xattr rb-tree from the new blob, potentially
increasing count, names_size, and vals_size.
The prealloc_blob size check that follows still uses the stale
required_blob_size computed before the rebuild, so it passes even when
prealloc_blob is too small for the now-larger tree. After __set_xattr()
adds one more xattr on top, __ceph_build_xattrs_blob() is called from
the cap flush path and hits:
BUG_ON(need > ci->i_xattrs.prealloc_blob->alloc_len);
Fix this by recomputing required_blob_size after __build_xattrs()
returns, using the current tree state. Also re-validate against
m_max_xattr_size to fall back to the sync path if the rebuilt tree now
exceeds the MDS limit.

…oad_from_user_allowed()
[ Upstream commit 60b5d1f ]
cxl_payload_from_user_allowed() casts and dereferences the input
payload without first verifying its size. When a raw mailbox command
is sent with an undersized payload (ie: 1 byte for CXL_MBOX_OP_CLEAR_LOG,
which expects a 16-byte UUID), uuid_equal() reads past the allocated buffer,
triggering a KASAN splat:

…equeue_peeked
[ Upstream commit 1b9bc71 ]
When sfb has children (eg qfq qdisc) whose peek() callback is
qdisc_peek_dequeued(), we could get a kernel panic. When the parent of such
qdiscs (eg illustrated in patch #3 as tbf) wants to retrieve an skb from
its child (sfb in this case), it will do the following:
1a. do a peek() - and when sensing there's an skb the child can offer, then
- the child in this case(sfb) calls its child's (qfq) peek.
qfq does the right thing and will return the gso_skb queue packet.
Note: if there wasnt a gso_skb entry then qfq will store it there.
1b. invoke a dequeue() on the child (sfb). And herein lies the problem.
- sfb will call the child's dequeue() which will essentially just
try to grab something of qfq's queue.

[ Upstream commit 6d34594 ]
Since the start of the git history, brport_store() always acquired the
bridge lock. Back then this decision made sense: The bridge lock
protects the STP state of the bridge and its ports and at that time the
function was only used by two STP related attributes (cost and
priority).
Nowadays, brport_store() processes a lot more attributes and most of
them do not need the bridge lock:
* Bridge flags: Only require RTNL. Read locklessly by the data path.
Annotations can be added in net-next.
* FDB port flushing: Only requires the FDB lock.
* Multicast attributes: Only require the multicast lock.
* Group forward mask: Only requires RTNL. Read locklessly by the data
path. Annotations can be added in net-next.
* Backup port: Only requires RTNL. Read locklessly by the data path.
This is a problem as the bridge calls dev_set_promiscuity() when certain
bridge port flags change and this function can sleep since the commit
cited below, resulting in a splat such as [1].
Fix this by reducing the scope of the bridge lock and only take it when
processing the two STP related attributes that require it. Remove the
now stale comment from br_switchdev_set_port_flag(). The
SWITCHDEV_F_DEFER flag can be removed in net-next.
