Removes the undocumented GPT → ESCALATED lane mapping from normalizePrFixLane() and the corresponding special case in the PR-fix queue route validation.

Changes:

  • src/types/index.ts: Removed if (normalized === "GPT") return "ESCALATED" — unknown lanes now fall through to NEEDS_HUMAN like any other unrecognized value.
  • src/app/api/pr-fix-queue/queued/route.ts: Removed the normalized !== "GPT" bypass in query param validation so the lane filter only accepts valid PrFixLane values.

Rationale: No other code path references "GPT" as a lane value. This was a GPT-model-specific lane marker that silently routed to the escalated lane without documentation, as flagged by the weekly tech debt audit.

PR Review: Remove undocumented GPT → ESCALATED lane normalization

Recommendation: Request Changes

The removal itself is technically sound — two lines removed to eliminate undocumented behavior — but the PR introduces an inconsistency with existing documentation that must be addressed before approval.

Change-by-Change Analysis

1. src/types/index.ts — Remove GPT→ESCALATED mapping in normalizePrFixLane()

Diff:

-if(normalized==="GPT")return"ESCALATED";

Finding: ✅ Correct removal. The function now falls through to the standard invalid-lane handling (return "NEEDS_HUMAN"), which is consistent with the rationale stated in the PR body.

2. src/app/api/pr-fix-queue/queued/route.ts — Remove GPT bypass in lane validation

Diff:

-if(normalized!=="GPT"&&!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){+if(!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){

Finding: ✅ Correct simplification. Removing the normalized !== "GPT" bypass ensures the API strictly validates against PrFixLane enum values only.

Standards Compliance

StandardStatusNotes
Error handling✅ PassInvalid lane now returns 400 with explicit error message
API routes return appropriate HTTP status codes✅ Pass400 returned for invalid lane
No undocumented behavior⚠️ See belowCreates inconsistency with documented compatibility alias

Linked Issue Fit

No linked issue available. The PR is self-described as tech debt cleanup from a weekly audit, which is a reasonable framing.

⚠️ Critical Inconsistency Found: Documentation Conflict

The repository contains active documentation that describes lane=gpt as a deprecated compatibility alias:

  1. docs/worker-execution-contract.md:196:

GET /api/agents/<name>/queue?lane=escalated (also accepts lane=gpt as a deprecated compatibility alias — do not use in new docs)

  2. docs/worker-cron-prompt-migration.md:29:

GET /api/agents/{agentName}/queue?lane=escalated (also accepts lane=gpt as a deprecated compatibility alias)

While these docs reference the /api/agents/<name>/queue endpoint (not /api/pr-fix-queue/queued), the existence of this documented compatibility alias establishes an intentional pattern for treating GPT as equivalent to ESCALATED at some API layer.

The PR's changes to normalizePrFixLane() affect ANY caller, including:

  • PR-fix queue path through GET /api/pr-fix-queue/queued (modified in this PR)
  • Issue lane classification paths
  • Any other code that calls normalizePrFixLane()

This creates a problem: If normalizePrFixLane('gpt') previously returned "ESCALATED" and is now returning "NEEDS_HUMAN", any internal callers expecting the "deprecated but accepted" semantics will silently receive incorrect lane values.

Required Changes Before Approval

  1. Verify agent queue compatibility: Confirm whether GET /api/agents/<agentName>/queue?lane=gpt is affected. If so, a coordinated change may be needed.

  2. Update documentation: If the "deprecated compatibility alias" for lane=gpt on /api/agents/<name>/queue is intentional and should remain, clarify why the same mapping is being removed from normalizePrFixLane(). If the deprecation is being completed, the docs in docs/worker-execution-contract.md and docs/worker-cron-prompt-migration.md should be updated to reflect full removal rather than "deprecated."

  3. Add or verify tests: Include test coverage confirming that normalizePrFixLane('gpt') now returns "NEEDS_HUMAN" as the expected behavior.

  4. Validate no other callers break: Audit all uses of normalizePrFixLane() to ensure no downstream behavior depends on the removed mapping.

PR Review: Remove undocumented GPT → ESCALATED lane normalization

Recommendation: APPROVE

This PR cleanly removes an undocumented GPT → ESCALATED lane mapping from the PR-fix queue, addressing issue #270 from the weekly tech debt audit.

Change-by-Change Findings

FileChangeAssessment
src/types/index.tsRemoved if (normalized === "GPT") return "ESCALATED" from normalizePrFixLane()✅ Correct. Unknown lanes now fall through to NEEDS_HUMAN like any other unrecognized value.
src/app/api/pr-fix-queue/queued/route.tsRemoved normalized !== "GPT" bypass in lane validation✅ Correct. The lane filter now strictly validates against isValidPrFixLane() only.
src/lib/pr-fix-queue.test.tsUpdated tests to use "escalated" lane instead of "gpt"✅ Correct. Tests updated to reflect the removed behavior.

Sources

  • PR body: States rationale that no other code path references "GPT" as a lane value
  • Issue #270: Tech debt audit flagged this as undocumented and recommended removal
  • Repository Impact Scan: Found docs/worker-execution-contract.md and docs/worker-cron-prompt-migration.md document lane=gpt as a deprecated compatibility alias for the agent queue endpoint (GET /api/agents/<name>/queue), which is a separate endpoint from the PR-fix queue being modified here

Standards Compliance

  • ✅ Follows TypeScript conventions (removes undocumented behavior, updates tests)
  • ✅ No agent-specific names introduced
  • ✅ Changes are minimal and targeted
  • ✅ Internal consistency maintained across the three modified files

Linked Issue Fit

Issue #270 required: "Remove the "GPT""ESCALATED" mapping unless it is explicitly intended, or document it and add a test."

This PR satisfies the issue by removing the mapping entirely. The issue acknowledged that "no other code path references "GPT" as a lane value" and recommended removal or documentation. The PR correctly removes it.

Note: The gpt compatibility alias documented in docs/worker-execution-contract.md and docs/worker-cron-prompt-migration.md applies to a different endpoint (GET /api/agents/[agentName]/queue) than the PR-fix queue route modified here (GET /api/pr-fix-queue/queued). These are separate code paths, so the PR is scoped correctly.

Evidence Provider Findings

No evidence providers were configured for this PR.

Tool Harness Findings

No tool harness findings available (planning warning: could not parse planning response as JSON).

Unknowns / Needs Verification

None. The changes are straightforward deletions with corresponding test updates. The diff is self-consistent and the rationale is well-documented in the PR body and linked issue.

1. src/types/index.ts — Remove GPT→ESCALATED mapping in normalizePrFixLane()

Diff:

-if(normalized==="GPT")return"ESCALATED";

Diff:

-if(normalized!=="GPT"&&!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){+if(!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){

1. src/types/index.ts — Remove GPT→ESCALATED mapping in normalizePrFixLane()

Diff:

-if(normalized==="GPT")return"ESCALATED";

Diff:

-if(normalized!=="GPT"&&!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){+if(!isValidPrFixLane(normalized)){

Unknowns / Needs Verification

ItemStatusRequired Action
Is /api/agents/<name>/queue affected?UnresolvedThe agent queue endpoint may still accept lane=gpt via its own query param handling or normalization. Verify if this PR should also update that endpoint's behavior or if the docs need updating.
Are there callers of normalizePrFixLane() that relied on GPT→ESCALATED?UnresolvedRepository scan hit multiple files, but no direct greps for normalizePrFixLane usage in provided corpus.
Why is lane=gpt documented as deprecated if it's being removed?UnresolvedThis suggests the deprecation was intentional for worker cron migration (see docs/worker-cron-prompt-migration.md context). Removing the behavior may break cron workers that still use lane=gpt query param.
Is test coverage affected?UnresolvedNo test file changes in diff. Existing tests for normalizePrFixLane() may now fail with input "GPT".
