Motivation and Context

2026-03-11 at 09 29 26

The MCP spec explicitly permits clients to send ping before the initialize request, but the Rust SDK was rejecting any such message with an ExpectedInitializeRequest error. This caused cross-SDK incompatibility with the TypeScript SDK, which probes connectivity with a ping before starting the handshake.

How Has This Been Tested?

Two new integration tests were added.

Breaking Changes

None. The server now accepts an additional valid message sequence that was previously rejected in error.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Motivation and Context

The MCP spec explicitly permits clients to send ping before the initialize request, but the Rust SDK was rejecting any such message with an ExpectedInitializeRequest error. This caused cross-SDK incompatibility with the TypeScript SDK, which probes connectivity with a ping before starting the handshake.
How Has This Been Tested?
Two new integration tests were added.
Breaking Changes
None. The server now accepts an additional valid message sequence that was previously rejected in error.

  •  Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  •  New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  •  Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  •  Documentation update
