A tessera is one tile of a mosaic. Tessera the IDE assembles thousands of code chunks, AST nodes, and test cases into a single, reviewable picture of your software's quality.


What it is

Tessera is a desktop IDE that runs static-only analysis on a codebase and uses an LLM to generate structured QA artifacts — test plans, test cases, defect reports, bug reports. Everything runs on your machine (local LLM, local SQLite, local AST parsing), so it works on closed-source, regulated, and offline codebases.

Open a folder → Tessera parses it with Tree-sitter, embeds chunks via the configured embedding provider (local Ollama by default; OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Hugging Face Inference optional), and indexes them in SQLite (sqlite-vec). Click an artifact button → the active LLM provider runs a versioned, JSON-Schema-constrained prompt over RAG-retrieved context. Output is validated against a Zod schema, then you approve, reject, regenerate-with-feedback, or export to Markdown. Source never leaves the machine on the default Ollama provider. Choosing a cloud embedding provider sends code snippets to that provider for embedding — the Settings UI says so explicitly.

Three guarantees: architecture-aware (RAG retrieves symbols across the whole project, not just the open file) · static by default (analysis never executes your code; an optional local Docker sandbox runs generated tests opt-in, off by default, with no network — safe for production / regulated repos) · structured (every artifact is validated JSON that exports cleanly to JIRA / Notion / GitHub Issues).

Each artifact is versioned; regenerating with reviewer feedback bumps the version and links to its parent.

Run generated tests (optional)

Opt-in, off by default. With the sandbox enabled in settings and Docker present, Run on a Test Cases artifact executes the generated JS/TS tests inside a hardened, network-less Docker container and paints pass/fail + line coverage onto the Monaco gutters (green = covered, amber = uncovered). Code never leaves the machine: the container runs with --network none, drops all capabilities, runs non-root on a read-only rootfs under cpu/mem/pids/file-size caps, and is killed on timeout or Stop. The backend refuses any run unless opt-in is confirmed. See plan/versions/v1/SANDBOX_TEST_RUNNER.md and ADR-0004.

Layered backend (see rules/rules.md §4.2): commands are thin Tauri IPC, services orchestrate RAG + prompts + validation, repositories are the only place that touches SQL, providers are LLM/embedding implementations behind a trait. API keys at rest are encrypted with AES-256-GCM derived from JWT_SECRET.

Embeddings are pluggable; the default nomic-embed-text (768-dim, Apache-2.0) ships with Ollama.

  • Optional shared stackpnpm services:up / services:down runs Ollama via docker-compose.yml.

Configuration

The desktop app reads apps/desktop/.env (copy from apps/desktop/.env.example); the root .env.example covers the optional Docker stack. Key variables:

  • OLLAMA_BASE_URL — Ollama endpoint, default http://localhost:11434
  • JWT_SECRET — required for auth paths; also derives the AES key for stored API keys
  • LOG_LEVELtracing filter (info, debug, tessera=trace)
  • SENTRY_DSN / VITE_SENTRY_DSN — error reporting (off when unset)

Roadmap

v0.1 (shipped) — feature-complete: 5 artifact types, 5 LLM providers, RAG pipeline, streaming generation, first-run wizard, cross-platform signed releases.

Sandbox test runner (shipped, JS/TS + Python) — opt-in Docker sandbox runs generated test cases and overlays pass/fail + line coverage on the editor, closing the generate → run → measure loop (ADR-0004). The Python slice (docker_py: pytest + coverage.py, stdlib-only image) landed on the same TestRunner trait with the Docker hardening extracted into a shared harness — adding Java/Go is one docker_<lang>.rs + one Dockerfile (plan). Cloud runners are next.

Autonomous test quality (shipped, v2) — three quality axes built on top of the sandbox loop, all 100% local: self-healing (plan) runs the suite and feeds failures back to the model until the tests pass; flaky-test detection (plan) reruns the suite N times to flag non-deterministic cases, with persisted history; and mutation testing (plan) proves what coverage cannot — it seeds bugs into the source (JS/TS), reruns your tests, and reports a mutation score plus the survivors your tests miss, then Improve coverage auto-generates tests that kill those survivors and re-scores to prove the lift.

Next — more AST languages (Go, Java, C#, Ruby, Rust) · sqlite-vec virtual-table search for projects > 50K chunks (ADR-0002) · cloud embedding providers · export to JIRA / Linear / GitHub Issues · team-mode collaboration.

Releases

Tag a commit to trigger the matrix build (Windows / macOS / Linux) via release.yml:

Contributing

Master is kept green and linear — PR-only, squash merge, branch protection. Husky hooks (conflict-marker + large-file guard on commit; typecheck + lint + shared/frontend tests + cargo checks on push) auto-wire on pnpm install, and CI still runs the full workspace test suite.

Each artifact is versioned; regenerating with reviewer feedback bumps the version and links to its parent.

Run generated tests (optional)

Opt-in, off by default. With the sandbox enabled in settings and Docker present, Run on a Test Cases artifact executes the generated JS/TS tests inside a hardened, network-less Docker container and paints pass/fail + line coverage onto the Monaco gutters (green = covered, amber = uncovered). Code never leaves the machine: the container runs with --network none, drops all capabilities, runs non-root on a read-only rootfs under cpu/mem/pids/file-size caps, and is killed on timeout or Stop. The backend refuses any run unless opt-in is confirmed. See plan/versions/v1/SANDBOX_TEST_RUNNER.md and ADR-0004.

Layered backend (see rules/rules.md §4.2): commands are thin Tauri IPC, services orchestrate RAG + prompts + validation, repositories are the only place that touches SQL, providers are LLM/embedding implementations behind a trait. API keys at rest are encrypted with AES-256-GCM derived from JWT_SECRET.

  • JWT_SECRET — required for auth paths; also derives the AES key for stored API keys
  • LOG_LEVELtracing filter (info, debug, tessera=trace)

Roadmap

v0.1 (shipped) — feature-complete: 5 artifact types, 5 LLM providers, RAG pipeline, streaming generation, first-run wizard, cross-platform signed releases.

Sandbox test runner (shipped, JS/TS + Python) — opt-in Docker sandbox runs generated test cases and overlays pass/fail + line coverage on the editor, closing the generate → run → measure loop (ADR-0004). The Python slice (docker_py: pytest + coverage.py, stdlib-only image) landed on the same TestRunner trait with the Docker hardening extracted into a shared harness — adding Java/Go is one docker_<lang>.rs + one Dockerfile (plan). Cloud runners are next.

Autonomous test quality (shipped, v2) — three quality axes built on top of the sandbox loop, all 100% local: self-healing (plan) runs the suite and feeds failures back to the model until the tests pass; flaky-test detection (plan) reruns the suite N times to flag non-deterministic cases, with persisted history; and mutation testing (plan) proves what coverage cannot — it seeds bugs into the source (JS/TS), reruns your tests, and reports a mutation score plus the survivors your tests miss, then Improve coverage auto-generates tests that kill those survivors and re-scores to prove the lift.

Master is kept green and linear — PR-only, squash merge, branch protection. Husky hooks (conflict-marker + large-file guard on commit; typecheck + lint + shared/frontend tests + cargo checks on push) auto-wire on pnpm install, and CI still runs the full workspace test suite.

A tessera is one tile of a mosaic. Tessera the IDE assembles thousands of code chunks, AST nodes, and test cases into a single, reviewable picture of your software's quality.


What it is

Tessera is a desktop IDE that runs static-only analysis on a codebase and uses an LLM to generate structured QA artifacts — test plans, test cases, defect reports, bug reports. Everything runs on your machine (local LLM, local SQLite, local AST parsing), so it works on closed-source, regulated, and offline codebases.

Open a folder → Tessera parses it with Tree-sitter, embeds chunks via the configured embedding provider (local Ollama by default; OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Hugging Face Inference optional), and indexes them in SQLite (sqlite-vec). Click an artifact button → the active LLM provider runs a versioned, JSON-Schema-constrained prompt over RAG-retrieved context. Output is validated against a Zod schema, then you approve, reject, regenerate-with-feedback, or export to Markdown. Source never leaves the machine on the default Ollama provider. Choosing a cloud embedding provider sends code snippets to that provider for embedding — the Settings UI says so explicitly.

What it is

Run generated tests (optional)

Opt-in, off by default. With the sandbox enabled in settings and Docker present, Run on a Test Cases artifact executes the generated JS/TS tests inside a hardened, network-less Docker container and paints pass/fail + line coverage onto the Monaco gutters (green = covered, amber = uncovered). Code never leaves the machine: the container runs with --network none, drops all capabilities, runs non-root on a read-only rootfs under cpu/mem/pids/file-size caps, and is killed on timeout or Stop. The backend refuses any run unless opt-in is confirmed. See plan/versions/v1/SANDBOX_TEST_RUNNER.md and ADR-0004.

Layered backend (see rules/rules.md §4.2): commands are thin Tauri IPC, services orchestrate RAG + prompts + validation, repositories are the only place that touches SQL, providers are LLM/embedding implementations behind a trait. API keys at rest are encrypted with AES-256-GCM derived from JWT_SECRET.

The desktop app reads apps/desktop/.env (copy from apps/desktop/.env.example); the root .env.example covers the optional Docker stack. Key variables:

  • OLLAMA_BASE_URL — Ollama endpoint, default http://localhost:11434
  • JWT_SECRET — required for auth paths; also derives the AES key for stored API keys
  • LOG_LEVELtracing filter (info, debug, tessera=trace)
  • SENTRY_DSN / VITE_SENTRY_DSN — error reporting (off when unset)

Roadmap

v0.1 (shipped) — feature-complete: 5 artifact types, 5 LLM providers, RAG pipeline, streaming generation, first-run wizard, cross-platform signed releases.

Sandbox test runner (shipped, JS/TS + Python) — opt-in Docker sandbox runs generated test cases and overlays pass/fail + line coverage on the editor, closing the generate → run → measure loop (ADR-0004). The Python slice (docker_py: pytest + coverage.py, stdlib-only image) landed on the same TestRunner trait with the Docker hardening extracted into a shared harness — adding Java/Go is one docker_<lang>.rs + one Dockerfile (plan). Cloud runners are next.

Autonomous test quality (shipped, v2) — three quality axes built on top of the sandbox loop, all 100% local: self-healing (plan) runs the suite and feeds failures back to the model until the tests pass; flaky-test detection (plan) reruns the suite N times to flag non-deterministic cases, with persisted history; and mutation testing (plan) proves what coverage cannot — it seeds bugs into the source (JS/TS), reruns your tests, and reports a mutation score plus the survivors your tests miss, then Improve coverage auto-generates tests that kill those survivors and re-scores to prove the lift.

Contributing

Master is kept green and linear — PR-only, squash merge, branch protection. Husky hooks (conflict-marker + large-file guard on commit; typecheck + lint + shared/frontend tests + cargo checks on push) auto-wire on pnpm install, and CI still runs the full workspace test suite.

A tessera is one tile of a mosaic. Tessera the IDE assembles thousands of code chunks, AST nodes, and test cases into a single, reviewable picture of your software's quality.


What it is

Tessera is a desktop IDE that runs static-only analysis on a codebase and uses an LLM to generate structured QA artifacts — test plans, test cases, defect reports, bug reports. Everything runs on your machine (local LLM, local SQLite, local AST parsing), so it works on closed-source, regulated, and offline codebases.

Open a folder → Tessera parses it with Tree-sitter, embeds chunks via the configured embedding provider (local Ollama by default; OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Hugging Face Inference optional), and indexes them in SQLite (sqlite-vec). Click an artifact button → the active LLM provider runs a versioned, JSON-Schema-constrained prompt over RAG-retrieved context. Output is validated against a Zod schema, then you approve, reject, regenerate-with-feedback, or export to Markdown. Source never leaves the machine on the default Ollama provider. Choosing a cloud embedding provider sends code snippets to that provider for embedding — the Settings UI says so explicitly.

Configuration

The desktop app reads apps/desktop/.env (copy from apps/desktop/.env.example); the root .env.example covers the optional Docker stack. Key variables:

  • OLLAMA_BASE_URL — Ollama endpoint, default http://localhost:11434
  • JWT_SECRET — required for auth paths; also derives the AES key for stored API keys
  • LOG_LEVELtracing filter (info, debug, tessera=trace)
  • SENTRY_DSN / VITE_SENTRY_DSN — error reporting (off when unset)

Roadmap

v0.1 (shipped) — feature-complete: 5 artifact types, 5 LLM providers, RAG pipeline, streaming generation, first-run wizard, cross-platform signed releases.

Sandbox test runner (shipped, JS/TS + Python) — opt-in Docker sandbox runs generated test cases and overlays pass/fail + line coverage on the editor, closing the generate → run → measure loop (ADR-0004). The Python slice (docker_py: pytest + coverage.py, stdlib-only image) landed on the same TestRunner trait with the Docker hardening extracted into a shared harness — adding Java/Go is one docker_<lang>.rs + one Dockerfile (plan). Cloud runners are next.

Autonomous test quality (shipped, v2) — three quality axes built on top of the sandbox loop, all 100% local: self-healing (plan) runs the suite and feeds failures back to the model until the tests pass; flaky-test detection (plan) reruns the suite N times to flag non-deterministic cases, with persisted history; and mutation testing (plan) proves what coverage cannot — it seeds bugs into the source (JS/TS), reruns your tests, and reports a mutation score plus the survivors your tests miss, then Improve coverage auto-generates tests that kill those survivors and re-scores to prove the lift.

Contributing

Master is kept green and linear — PR-only, squash merge, branch protection. Husky hooks (conflict-marker + large-file guard on commit; typecheck + lint + shared/frontend tests + cargo checks on push) auto-wire on pnpm install, and CI still runs the full workspace test suite.

A tessera is one tile of a mosaic. Tessera the IDE assembles thousands of code chunks, AST nodes, and test cases into a single, reviewable picture of your software's quality.


What it is

Tessera is a desktop IDE that runs static-only analysis on a codebase and uses an LLM to generate structured QA artifacts — test plans, test cases, defect reports, bug reports. Everything runs on your machine (local LLM, local SQLite, local AST parsing), so it works on closed-source, regulated, and offline codebases.

Open a folder → Tessera parses it with Tree-sitter, embeds chunks via the configured embedding provider (local Ollama by default; OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Hugging Face Inference optional), and indexes them in SQLite (sqlite-vec). Click an artifact button → the active LLM provider runs a versioned, JSON-Schema-constrained prompt over RAG-retrieved context. Output is validated against a Zod schema, then you approve, reject, regenerate-with-feedback, or export to Markdown. Source never leaves the machine on the default Ollama provider. Choosing a cloud embedding provider sends code snippets to that provider for embedding — the Settings UI says so explicitly.

Three guarantees: architecture-aware (RAG retrieves symbols across the whole project, not just the open file) · static by default (analysis never executes your code; an optional local Docker sandbox runs generated tests opt-in, off by default, with no network — safe for production / regulated repos) · structured (every artifact is validated JSON that exports cleanly to JIRA / Notion / GitHub Issues).

Each artifact is versioned; regenerating with reviewer feedback bumps the version and links to its parent.

Run generated tests (optional)

Opt-in, off by default. With the sandbox enabled in settings and Docker present, Run on a Test Cases artifact executes the generated JS/TS tests inside a hardened, network-less Docker container and paints pass/fail + line coverage onto the Monaco gutters (green = covered, amber = uncovered). Code never leaves the machine: the container runs with --network none, drops all capabilities, runs non-root on a read-only rootfs under cpu/mem/pids/file-size caps, and is killed on timeout or Stop. The backend refuses any run unless opt-in is confirmed. See plan/versions/v1/SANDBOX_TEST_RUNNER.md and ADR-0004.
