Knucklebones

The Knucklebones dice game in Cult of the Lamb.

You can find the game at knucklebones.io.

The frontend is built with: React, Vite & Tailwind CSS.

The backend is built with: Cloudflare Workers & Durable Objects

The frontend is hosted with Cloudflare Pages while the backend is a Cloudflare Worker.

All of it is written with TypeScript.

Repository structure

We use Turborepo to manage our monorepo.

The apps directory contains the React application (front) and the Cloudflare Worker (worker) (along with the definition of the Durable Object).

The packages directory contains code that's shared between the React application and Cloudflare worker.

Local development

Install dependencies, initialize the local D1 database, and start both apps:

pnpm install
pnpm db:migrate:local
pnpm dev

Wrangler keeps local D1 data separate from Cloudflare. Branch previews use the shared staging Worker and staging identity database; production has separate Worker, Durable Object, and D1 resources. Database migrations are append-only and must be applied before deploying compatible staging or production code.

SENTRY_DSN is an environment-scoped Worker secret. Deployment credentials remain in the repository's GitHub Actions secrets and must never be committed.

Operations

Staging and production emit credential-free JSON events to Worker logs. http.request records the normalized route, status, stable error code, request ID, and duration. WebSocket events record accepted connections, rejected client messages, closes, and errors without player IDs, room IDs, tickets, URLs, or message bodies. Sentry receives a copy of the request with its query string and sensitive headers removed.

Configure log-based alerts for these initial thresholds:

  • five or more 5xx responses, or a 5xx rate above 1%, within five minutes;
  • more than 50 authentication failures in one minute;
  • more than 25 STALE_REVISION or IDEMPOTENCY_KEY_REUSED responses in five minutes;
  • more than 10 rejected WebSocket messages or WebSocket errors in five minutes.

Investigations should correlate events using request_id. Never add raw authorization headers, credentials, transfer tokens, recovery phrases, query strings, complete WebSocket URLs, or request/response bodies to events.
