Closes#780

Scope

  • Adds default-off, persisted desktop notifications for settled turn completion/failure, new approvals, and new user-input requests.
  • Suppresses initial hydration, replay/reconnect/reseed, archived/removed threads, focused windows, disabled settings, and duplicate events.
  • Uses generic silent copy with no agent response, diff, command, secret, or thread content.
  • Restores/focuses the app and consumes a one-shot environment/thread target on click.
  • Keeps the macOS process alive after closing the last window only while notifications are enabled.

Technical decisions

  • Derives events with a pure reducer over canonical shell snapshots.
  • Separates renderer derivation, Electron focus/settings policy, and native delivery.
  • Uses Electron Notification; unsupported or failed delivery is non-fatal.
  • Bounds process-local deduplication to 512 event IDs.

Validation

  • Focused notification suites: 5 files, 37 tests passed.
  • vp test: 586 files, 4,620 tests passed; 2 files/7 tests skipped.
  • vp check: passed; 9 pre-existing React warnings.
  • vp run typecheck: 15 tasks passed; existing Effect suggestions only.
  • git diff --check: passed.

macOS smoke

An isolated desktop run produced completion, approval, user-input, and failure transitions; each reached desktop.notifications.show once. Native banner/click, focused/disabled suppression, and denied-permission cycles remain pending because the T3 host and dev app share com.github.Electron, causing bundle-level foreground suppression. This PR stays draft until that matrix is completed from a packaged build with an independent bundle or manual focus outside Electron.

Desktop notification setting

Full evidence: .context/evidence/issue-780-native-desktop-notifications-validation.md.

Out of scope and limits

  • No notification after the desktop process fully exits.
  • No sounds, pets, characters, overlays, tray/menu-bar UI, generic hooks, remote push/APNs, daemon, or mobile changes.

Note

Add native turn notifications to the Electron desktop app

  • Adds a DesktopNotifications service in the desktop main process that shows silent native OS notifications for AI turn completions, approvals, and user-input requests, with deduplication by eventId and a click handler that navigates to the relevant thread.
  • Adds a reduceDesktopNotificationObservation reducer in the web layer that tracks per-thread attention state across environment shell updates and emits one-shot events (turn-completed, turn-failed, approval-required, user-input-required) on significant transitions.
  • Wires the full pipeline from shell state → event derivation → IPC → native notification via new DesktopNotificationBootstrap, subscribeDesktopNotificationEnvironment, and preload bridge APIs (showDesktopNotification, consumePendingDesktopNotificationTarget, onDesktopNotificationTargetAvailable).
  • Adds a Desktop notifications toggle to the General Settings panel (Electron only), backed by a new desktopNotificationsEnabled field in ClientSettingsSchema defaulting to false.
  • On macOS, closing the main window now hides it (retaining the renderer) when desktop notifications are enabled and the app is not quitting, instead of destroying it.
  • Risk: the window-hide behavior on macOS is a new default that changes close semantics when notifications are opted in; users must quit explicitly to fully exit.

🟡 Mediumelectron/ElectronNotification.ts:41

pruneNotifications evicts notifications from the tracking map without closing them, so the OS notification remains visible but its click handler is lost. Clicking an evicted banner silently fails to fire onClick because the Notification instance is no longer retained. It also fails to enforce the 64-active-notification cap since the notifications keep running. Consider calling close() on the evicted Notification before removing it from the map.

Closes#780
