Unfortunately, we got a regression reported by @zware a few hours right after I thought we were in the clear for pip 26.2 regressions: pypa/pip#14227
It's pretty minor, affecting only users who use keyring in a non-activated virtual environment while performing a local wheel build. There are also two workarounds for affected users (and of course the option to downgrade or upgrade manually), so feel free to reject this PR if it's too much churn/not worth it at this point.
