RFI-IRFOS is an independent Austrian research institute building the Ternary Intelligence Stack (TIS) — a full-stack, post-binary AI platform (language, compiler, ISA, virtual machine, linear algebra, API, and model) built on balanced-ternary arithmetic {-1, 0, +1}.

Our proof that the model layer works is albert. — a ternary Mixture-of-Experts language model trained from scratch that grows its own architecture through autonomous, plateau-gated Net2Net surgery.

What we build

  • ternary-intelligence-stack — the full TIS monorepo: the Ternlang language, the BET virtual machine, @sparseskip sparse inference, and albert.
  • albert. — a ternary Mixture-of-Experts language model trained from scratch, growing its own depth via autonomous plateau-gated surgery · HuggingFace
  • rusty-penguin — a ternary-first operating system written from scratch in pure Rust: its own kernel, GUI desktop, from-scratch TCP/IP stack, and a Linux ABI layer that runs real binaries on bare metal.
  • Lighthouse — the institute's sovereign in-house workplace OS: one self-hosted Rust + React binary that runs the entire not-for-profit from a single dashboard — comms, docs, CRM, finance, payroll, HR, governance, and albert.'s live training telemetry beside the company's own data. Patent pending A50296/2026 (TIS platform, Austrian Patent Office). Developed and documented for EU AI Act Art. 13 / 14 / 15 (transparency, human oversight, robustness) compliance by design.

Legal entity

RFI-IRFOS is a registered, fully regulated Austrian entity — not an informal initiative. It is a not-for-profit: it earns revenue through multiple streams permitted by its statutes and reinvests at least 90% of surplus into the research mission (at most 10% retained for operations). Surplus is not distributed to members.

RFI-IRFOS is an independent Austrian research institute building the Ternary Intelligence Stack (TIS) — a full-stack, post-binary AI platform (language, compiler, ISA, virtual machine, linear algebra, API, and model) built on balanced-ternary arithmetic {-1, 0, +1}.
Our proof that the model layer works is albert. — a ternary Mixture-of-Experts language model trained from scratch that grows its own architecture through autonomous, plateau-gated Net2Net surgery.
