rust 1.89.0 fails to bootstrap on x86_64

Hi,

This is a spinoff of #145587 . I'm encountering the same error as described there, but the difference is that I'm not doing a cross compilation.

Basically, we're bootstrapping rust 1.89.0 (using our own packaged rust 1.88.0). Our rust 1.89 package definition can be found here:

Here's the rustc version I'm using to bootstrap:

As I said, this is not a cross compilation; I'm bootstrapping the package in a x86_64 machine.

Initially I thought this could be related to #141729 and tested by reverting the commit, but that doesn't work either (I see another error).

@Kobzol asked me to try bootstrapping the master branch, but that doesn't work with the steps I'm using because I'd have to use a newer version of rustc apparently:

Yes, you would have to use newer sources. Bootstrap has sadly been all kinds of broken in the past months, and still is (we still have a lot of fixes to do), and we're unlikely to backport this. So if it was broken in 1.88.0, it will likely stay that way. That's why I wanted to figure out if you still have the same issue on maste¶.

OK, so here's what I did.

I installed rust nightly (using rustup) and grabbed the rustc-nightly-src.tar.xz tarball. I also installed the same build dependencies that my package is using, which are:

build-base busybox ca-certificates-bundle clang-20 cmake coreutils curl-dev file libLLVM-20 libssh2-dev libxml2-dev llvm-20 llvm-20-dev openssl-dev patch python3 samurai wasi-libc xz-dev zlib-dev

Then I followed the exact same steps as I posted in the bug description, and the bootstrap succeeded.

I decided to test bootstrapping version 1.89.0 using rustup's 1.88.0 (instead of using the rust-1.88 package from my system), and the bootstrap also succeeded. This tells me that the problem may be with our version of rust-1.88...? I'm wondering if the steps I followed are sufficient to draw that conclusion, though.

We saw a lot of issues with building from source on the past couple Rust versions, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was indeed an issue there, but it's alread fixed now.

@Kobzol ACK. And you wouldn't happen to know offhand which commit(s) fixed the issue for 1.89.0, right? In our case it is important to be able to bootstrap 1.89.0 using our packaged 1.88.0.

It doesn't seem to be; I'm seeing other another error here. But just to make sure, I applied the patch from https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/rust/-/blob/main/0007-bootstrap-Workaround-for-system-stage0.patch?ref_type=heads and it still doesn't work.

This seems to suggest that your Rust doesn't have a libstd for x64 Linux available. How did you build the rustc (using which bootstrap command)? And what are the contents of <sysroot>/lib/rustlib/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu?

Does your rustc --print target-libdir print something unexpected? In Arch Linux's case we had lib64 instead of lib. This confused bootstrap and had to be fixed before we could bootstrap 1.89.0.
