Thanks for the pull request, and welcome! The Rust team is excited to review your changes, and you should hear from @nikomatsakis (or someone else) soon. If any changes to this PR are deemed necessary, please add them as extra commits. This ensures that the reviewer can see what has changed since they last reviewed the code. Due to the way GitHub handles out-of-date commits, this should also make it reasonably obvious what issues have or haven't been addressed. Large or tricky changes may require several passes of review and changes. Please see the contribution instructions for more information. |

If we don't change it then I'll add a comment explaining this. It's particularly confusing to me because |

Should that be a separate pull request or should I modify this one? |

OK. I'll make a separate one. |
Add comment explaining the ctxt field in Span As discussed in #45747. r? @petrochenkov
Reading through the code, I was confused for a while because the code in
libsyntax_pos/span_encoding.rsappears to support storing theSyntaxContextinside a compressedSpan. However, no bits are actually allocated forSyntaxContext.Since this is unlikely to ever be used, I think the code would be clearer for the next newcomer if this was simply removed.
See #44646
