Docker Hub 26.0.0 / 26.1.0 tags predate this repo's pipeline — no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN pin, no provenance labels, and they differ from builds.json's declared pairs #37

We're building a contract source verification service (SCF #44) and rebuild contracts inside
the published stellar/stellar-cli images. While validating build environments we found that
the 26.0.0 and 26.1.0 tags on Docker Hub don't appear to come from this repo's pipeline,
and behave differently from the images that do.

Provenance

  • This repo has no 26.x release (releases: 25.1.0, 25.2.0, 25.2.0-1, 27.0.0).
  • The 27.0.0 images carry full OCI labels (org.opencontainers.image.source
    this repo, revision, vendor, …) and build the CLI from source per the Dockerfile.
  • The Docker Hub 26.0.0 / 26.1.0 images carry only the base image's inherited label
    (sourcerust-lang/docker-rust), and install the CLI by copying a prebuilt binary
    (COPY stellar-amd64/stellar /usr/local/bin/stellar) — an earlier publishing flow.

Behavioral consequence: the toolchain isn't pinned

Your current Dockerfile bakes RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN=${RUST_VERSION} precisely so that "an
in-source rust-toolchain.toml in a consumer's contract can't silently swap our pinned
toolchain at build time" (its own comment). The 26.x images don't set it:

  • 26.0.0RUST_VERSION=1.94.1, no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN
  • 26.1.0RUST_VERSION=1.96.0, no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN

Repro: build any project carrying a rust-toolchain.toml inside 26.1.0 — e.g.
blend-capital/blend-contracts-v2 @ ba22b487 declares channel 1.81:

docker run --rm -v <src>:/source stellar/stellar-cli:26.1.0 \
stellar contract build --manifest-path Cargo.toml --package pool-factory

rustup downloads rust 1.81.0 from the network at build time, and the produced wasm stamps
rsver: 1.81.0 — not the image's 1.96.0. For reproducible-build / verification use these
images aren't self-contained: what they build with depends on the submitted source, and
pinning the image by digest still doesn't pin the toolchain.

They also don't match builds.json

builds.json (described as the source of truth for published pairs) declares
26.0.0 → rust 1.93/1.94 and 26.1.0 → rust 1.95 — none of which were published — while the
Docker Hub 26.x tags contain 1.94.1 and 1.96.0.

Ask: clarify the status of the Docker Hub 26.x tags. If they're meant to be supported,
re-publishing them through the current pipeline would fix the toolchain pin, the provenance
labels, and the builds.json drift in one pass; if not, retiring or documenting them would
stop verifiers from treating them as pinned environments.

                      blend-capital/blend-contracts-v2 @ ba22b487 declares channel 1.81:

                      stellar contract build --manifest-path Cargo.toml --package pool-factory
                      

                      rustup downloads rust 1.81.0 from the network at build time, and the produced wasm stamps
                      rsver: 1.81.0 — not the image's 1.96.0. For reproducible-build / verification use these
                      images aren't self-contained: what they build with depends on the submitted source, and
                      pinning the image by digest still doesn't pin the toolchain.

                      They also don't match builds.json

                      builds.json (described as the source of truth for published pairs) declares
                      26.0.0 → rust 1.93/1.94 and 26.1.0 → rust 1.95 — none of which were published — while the
                      Docker Hub 26.x tags contain 1.94.1 and 1.96.0.

                      Ask: clarify the status of the Docker Hub 26.x tags. If they're meant to be supported,
                      re-publishing them through the current pipeline would fix the toolchain pin, the provenance
                      labels, and the builds.json drift in one pass; if not, retiring or documenting them would
                      stop verifiers from treating them as pinned environments.

                          Docker Hub 26.0.0 / 26.1.0 tags predate this repo's pipeline — no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN pin, no provenance labels, and they differ from builds.json's declared pairs #37

                          We're building a contract source verification service (SCF #44) and rebuild contracts inside
                          the published stellar/stellar-cli images. While validating build environments we found that
                          the 26.0.0 and 26.1.0 tags on Docker Hub don't appear to come from this repo's pipeline,
                          and behave differently from the images that do.

                          Provenance

                          • This repo has no 26.x release (releases: 25.1.0, 25.2.0, 25.2.0-1, 27.0.0).
                          • The 27.0.0 images carry full OCI labels (org.opencontainers.image.source
                            this repo, revision, vendor, …) and build the CLI from source per the Dockerfile.
                          • The Docker Hub 26.0.0 / 26.1.0 images carry only the base image's inherited label
                            (sourcerust-lang/docker-rust), and install the CLI by copying a prebuilt binary
                            (COPY stellar-amd64/stellar /usr/local/bin/stellar) — an earlier publishing flow.

                          Behavioral consequence: the toolchain isn't pinned

                          Your current Dockerfile bakes RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN=${RUST_VERSION} precisely so that "an
                          in-source rust-toolchain.toml in a consumer's contract can't silently swap our pinned
                          toolchain at build time" (its own comment). The 26.x images don't set it:

                          • 26.0.0RUST_VERSION=1.94.1, no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN
                          • 26.1.0RUST_VERSION=1.96.0, no RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN
