Pairs with tangle-network/agent-dev-container#4616, which gives a box's inference credential the name TANGLE_INFERENCE_KEY alongside the vendor spellings it already carried. Context: agent-dev-container#4614.

The ladder

MCP_SUPERVISOR_ROUTER_KEY → TANGLE_INFERENCE_KEY → OPENAI_API_KEY → TANGLE_API_KEY

OPENAI_API_KEY holds the identical value and stays on the ladder — for boxes provisioned before the Tangle-native name existed, and for a BYO OpenAI key. So this is safe to land in either order relative to #4616: until that ships, the new rung is simply never populated and behavior is unchanged.

Why

Naming a vendor spelling first made this ladder read as "prefer OpenAI over Tangle" — a direct challenge to #680 from the person who owns the product, phrased as:

"i dont understand the other pr it uses openai-api-key when tangle api key is for both sandboxes and tangle router"

The reading was reasonable and the code invited it. What the order actually means is: what the caller explicitly set, then the inference credential, then the control-plane key as a single-key-host fallback. It was never a preference between vendors. Now it reads that way.

The measured facts behind the split are unchanged and worth restating: a user sk-tan-… key gets 200 on router.tangle.tools/v1/chat/completions and 403 on sandbox control. Outside a box one Tangle key is unified for inference — which is why TANGLE_API_KEY remains the last rung. Inside a box the platform deliberately mints a separate inference key and swaps it for a proxy token, so the real key never reaches /proc/PID/environ.

Tests

  • the Tangle name wins over its vendor spelling when both are present
  • the vendor spelling still resolves when the Tangle name is absent (old boxes, BYO keys)
  • an explicit MCP_SUPERVISOR_ROUTER_KEY still beats both

Kill-tested: removing the new rung fails exactly one of the three and passes the other twelve.

Pairs with tangle-network/agent-dev-container#4616, which gives a box's inference credential the name TANGLE_INFERENCE_KEY alongside the vendor spellings it already carried. Context: agent-dev-container#4614.

The ladder

MCP_SUPERVISOR_ROUTER_KEY → TANGLE_INFERENCE_KEY → OPENAI_API_KEY → TANGLE_API_KEY

OPENAI_API_KEY holds the identical value and stays on the ladder — for boxes provisioned before the Tangle-native name existed, and for a BYO OpenAI key. So this is safe to land in either order relative to #4616: until that ships, the new rung is simply never populated and behavior is unchanged.

Why

Naming a vendor spelling first made this ladder read as "prefer OpenAI over Tangle" — a direct challenge to #680 from the person who owns the product, phrased as:

"i dont understand the other pr it uses openai-api-key when tangle api key is for both sandboxes and tangle router"

The reading was reasonable and the code invited it. What the order actually means is: what the caller explicitly set, then the inference credential, then the control-plane key as a single-key-host fallback. It was never a preference between vendors. Now it reads that way.

The measured facts behind the split are unchanged and worth restating: a user sk-tan-… key gets 200 on router.tangle.tools/v1/chat/completions and 403 on sandbox control. Outside a box one Tangle key is unified for inference — which is why TANGLE_API_KEY remains the last rung. Inside a box the platform deliberately mints a separate inference key and swaps it for a proxy token, so the real key never reaches /proc/PID/environ.

Tests

  • the Tangle name wins over its vendor spelling when both are present
  • the vendor spelling still resolves when the Tangle name is absent (old boxes, BYO keys)
  • an explicit MCP_SUPERVISOR_ROUTER_KEY still beats both

Kill-tested: removing the new rung fails exactly one of the three and passes the other twelve.

tsc --noEmit 0 errors, vitest tests/mcp/delegate-supervisor-provisioning.test.ts 13/13.
