Toggleable two-pane git diff view.

demo.mp4

Toggling on closes every other pane and builds a two-pane diff around the current file: the left pane shows the file at HEAD (readonly), the right pane is the regular editable buffer. Diff highlights update live as you edit. Navigating to another repo file (telescope, bufferline, :e) from either pane re-targets the diff to that file.

  • Folding is disabled in both panes, so the entire file is always visible.
  • The plugin toggles itself off when the layout is broken: closing either pane (:q), deleting the left pane's buffer (:bd, mini.bufremove), or loading a non-file / out-of-repo buffer into the editable pane.
  • Toggling on opens nvim-tree with the git-clean filter applied (only dirty files visible); toggling off clears the filter and closes the tree. Both behaviors are configurable via the nvim_tree options.

Requires Neovim 0.10+ (uses vim.system and nvim_open_win splits) and nvim-tree.

Motivation

The motivation for this plugin is a diff view that works with my specific workflow, which includes nvim-tree/telescope for file navigation: toggle the diff on, jump between dirty files with the tree or telescope, and the diff follows along.

Install (lazy.nvim)

{
"wallpants/differente.nvim",
dependencies= { "nvim-tree/nvim-tree.lua" },
cmd= { "Differente" },
keys= {
{
"<leader>gd",
function()
require("differente").toggle()
end,
desc="Toggle differente",
},
},
---@typedifferente_configopts= {
-- config goes here
},
}

Configuration

The opts you pass are deep-merged with these defaults:

localdefaults= {
-- blend factor of diff backgrounds into Normal bg-- (0 = invisible, 1 = the colorscheme's full Diff* color)alpha= { add=1, change=1, delete=1, text=1 },
-- nvim-tree integration while toggled onnvim_tree= {
-- open the tree while toggled onopen=true,
-- apply the git-clean filter (only dirty files visible)git_filter=true,
},
-- write event/decision logs to stdpath("state")/differente.logdebug=false,
}

Usage

  • :Differente (or your keymap) toggles the diff view.
  • Open files from the tree (or telescope — any repo file entering a window while active gets the diff treatment).
  • [c / ]c jump between hunks; edits in the right pane save normally.

The panes are plain Neovim diff mode (:diffthis), so anything diff mode supports works here too — do/:diffget to pull a hunk from HEAD into your file, diffopt tweaks like linematch, and so on. The one exception is pushing changes into the HEAD pane (dp/:diffput): that pane is a readonly scratch buffer.

About

Yet another git diff plugin for neovim, made specifically for my workflow with nvim-tree.

},
-- write event/decision logs to stdpath("state")/differente.logdebug=false,
}

Repository files navigation

differente.nvim

{
"wallpants/differente.nvim",
dependencies= { "nvim-tree/nvim-tree.lua" },
cmd= { "Differente" },
keys= {
{
"<leader>gd",
function()
require("differente").toggle()
end,
desc="Toggle differente",
},
},
---@typedifferente_configopts= {
-- config goes here
},
}

Configuration

The opts you pass are deep-merged with these defaults:

localdefaults= {
-- blend factor of diff backgrounds into Normal bg-- (0 = invisible, 1 = the colorscheme's full Diff* color)alpha= { add=1, change=1, delete=1, text=1 },
-- nvim-tree integration while toggled onnvim_tree= {
-- open the tree while toggled onopen=true,
-- apply the git-clean filter (only dirty files visible)git_filter=true,
},
-- write event/decision logs to stdpath("state")/differente.logdebug=false,
}
