What is the unexpected behavior?

The negative value appears for one update cycle immediately after the VPN establishes a connection. It then starts taking more space on the screen than it normally does.

The issue likely stems from a calculation error during the network interface handoff, when the VPN initializes, the delta between the previous physical interface stats and the new virtual interface results in a temporary negative value.

Steps to reproduce the unexpected behavior.

  1. Ensure Vitals is active and the Network monitor is visible in the GNOME top bar
  2. Open a terminal or your VPN client
  3. Initiate a connection to a VPN
  4. Observe the Vitals network speed display immediately as the tunnel interface initializes
  5. It is rare, but the value can momentarily dips into the negative before normalizing to positive values
