This patchset aims to implement the preliminary flow for suspend/resume for APL.

V2: Now the pipeline status is restored at resume by sending the ipc's to create all the components and set up the pipeline. With this change, the DSP is power off at suspend and when it resumes from suspend, audio playback works normally.

But when suspend is invoked while audio playback is in progress, playback does not resume and aplay quits with the error "pcm_write:2011: write error: Input/output error".

V3: changes made to reflect previous comments

Audio playback resumes normally after suspend/resume.

V4: Added support for runtime PM and made changes based on previous feedback.

Now, both runtime PM and suspend/resume work well.

2 tasks still left to do:

  1. store/restore kcontrol values
  2. free sroute/connect during route_unload.

From kernel log, rmbox should be not work ? so no rmbox message?
for 0x60010000 error, I think it is caused by no topology. So enable rmbox is important for debug.

And I think each internal buffer pointer or component status should be kept ?Or OS would send hw_param and start again?

@RanderWang

Copy link
Copy Markdown

What happens to all the components created when the topology is loaded before suspend?
[Rander] Each component initialize its status

Should the topology be reloaded after resume?
[Rander] Each component should restore status. loading topology would restore each components to initialized status, maybe extra restore?

@RanderWang

I am not sure: some memory in DSP is still valid, so it can be used to keep some status

@ranj063 : I don't think the topology should be parsed again on resume, but certainly anything that results in an IPC should be invoked on resume, e.g. SSP settings and pipeline commands (likely why the hw_params fail). I am afraid today we combined token parsing and IPC, maybe not such a good idea in hindsight.

@ranj063 we probably dont want to pasre the topology again, but sof/topology.c does track a lot of the topology structures locally when probing. i.e. we have a list of widgets, controls etc. We should store a pointer to the topology raw structure for each topology object and on resume we iterate through all the topology object lists and send IPCs.

@plbossart@lgirdwood Thanks! Let me re-send the ipc's to restore the pipeline from the topology objects stored in the driver.

@plbossart@lgirdwood , I have updated the commits in this pull request to restore the pipeline at resume.
With this change, I am able to start playback after resume. But I still fail when I suspend while audio playback is in progress with the error: "pcm_write:2011: write error: Input/output error".

@ranj063 ok, half way there now. Have a look at the legacy baytrail driver (sound/soc/intel/baytral/*) as it stores PCM playback state prior to S3 and restores at S0. You probably need to duplicate this flow.

What about if we have 2 or more pipelines ? If this restores all pipelines then maybe rename func.

Just wondering if we need all these case statements given all the IPC data uses a standard header (which includes cmd and size). i.e. we cas the private data to the header type to get size and cmd.

@lgirdwood I started it that way but I kept running into errors with it. The only way I can send the ipc without errors is by having all these case statements.

@lgirdwood. I've fixed it now. The error I was seeing was because of not casting the comp objects to (void *) while storing them.

Best to try and send this today as it allows DSP to enter D3 ready state. Any context can be saved later.

I'd expect most of this function to be in pm.c as generic code. The HW specific part hda_dsp_core_reset_power_down() can be an HW abstracted operation (add ops to the operations callback structure). e.g. we could have snd_sof_dsp_suspend(sdev), snd_sof_dsp_resume(sdev)

@lgirdwood I've just pushed the v3 changes. Now I can resume audio playback normally after suspend/resume.

There's an occasional xrun that happens at resume but its been hard to reproduce.

Looks good overall, still some style issues and my usual quixotic chase of memory leaks. One functional part also to align times with the firmware so that on resume the trace logs aren't completely misleading.

need to free sroute first? this doesn't look consistent error management, or do you assume that all frees are done in an sof_route_unload()?

you need a more consistent memory allocation/free. Here you free on one error, but not for all the other cases in this function below (look for all the return -EINVAL cases). You should have a set of gotos and deal with errors in a more organized way, or you deal with all the frees in another cleanup routine called on failure.

@plbossart@lgirdwood it doesnt look like route_unload ever gets called.
I see a comment in soc-topology.c in the remove_widget() function that suggests that routes must
be removed before the widget itself is removed. But I cant find any references to route_unload.

Also, the arguments to the route_unload() method seem ambiguous. There's no dobj member in snd_soc_dapm_route structure. So I'm not sure how to get a handle to it in order to be able to remove it. Can you please help?

@plbossart@lgirdwood I've made some more changes to the flow now.
But the good news is that both suspend/resume and runtime_pm work well. Could you please help review?
This needs some more extensive testing and there are 2 opens to address that I've mentioned in first comment that shows the progression of patches.

@plbossart this is the commit id for the device change in this patchset:
0e6a2a584473a05efbb34185272e1c34cf436fcc

With the callbacks set for the pci device, they never get called as the runtime_pm_enable() is called for the platform device and not the pci device.

So setting the callbacks for the platform device fixes the issue.

@ranj063 for the kcontrol restore, iirc baytrail/haswell drivers did this by caching the values in the host.

@lgirdwood, sure. I think I have an idea of how to do this. I will update the PR after I fix it.

When using a "FILE *" type, checkpatch considers this an error:
ERROR: need consistent spacing around '*' (ctx:WxV)
thesofproject#32: FILE: f.c:8:
+static void a(FILE *const b)
^
Fix this by explicitly defining "FILE" as a common type. This is useful for
user space patches.
With this patch, we now get:
<E> <E> <_>WS( )
<E> <E> <_>IDENT(static)
<E> <V> <_>WS( )
<E> <V> <_>DECLARE(void )
<E> <T> <_>FUNC(a)
<E> <V> <V>PAREN('(')
<EV> <N> <_>DECLARE(FILE *const )
<EV> <T> <_>IDENT(b)
<EV> <V> <_>PAREN(')') -> V
<E> <V> <_>WS(
)
32 > . static void a(FILE *const b)

By keep sending L2CAP_CONF_REQ packets, chan->num_conf_rsp increases
multiple times and eventually it will wrap around the maximum number
(i.e., 255).
This patch prevents this by adding a boundary check with
L2CAP_MAX_CONF_RSP

There is quite a bit of tribal knowledge around proper use of try_module_get()
and requiring *somehow* the module to still exist to use this call in a way
that is safe. Document this bit of tribal knowledge. To be clear, you should
only use try_module_get() *iff* you are 100% sure the module already does
exist and is not on its way out.
You can be sure the module still exists and is alive through:
1) Direct protection with its refcount: you know some earlier caller called
__module_get() safely
2) Implied protection: there is an implied protection against module removal
Having an idea of when you are sure __module_get() might be called earlier is
easy to understand however the implied protection requires an example. We use
sysfs an an example for implied protection without a direct module reference
count bump. kernfs / sysfs uses its own internal reference counting for files
being actively used, when such file are active they completely prevent
the module from being removed. kernfs protects this with its kernfs_active().
Effort has been put into verifying the kernfs implied protection works by
using a currently out-of-tree test_sysfs selftest test thesofproject#32 [0]:
./tools/testing/selftests/sysfs/sysfs.sh -t 0032
Without kernfs / sysfs preventing module removal through its active reference
count (kernfs_active()) the write would fail or worse, a crash would happen in
this test and it does not.
Similar safeguards are required for other users of try_module_get() *iff*
they are not ensuring the above rule 1) is followed.

This warning is due to the section being protected by a srcu critical read
section, but the list traversal being done with classic RCU API. Fix the
warning by using corresponding SRCU read lock/unlock APIs. While doing so,
since we always manipulate the same list (managed through a pointer
embedded in struct_wilc), add a macro to reduce the corresponding
boilerplate in each call site.

This happens because, although `prepare_fb` and `cleanup_fb` are
perfectly balanced, we cannot guarantee consistency in the check
plane->state->fb == state->fb. This means that sometimes we can increase
the refcount in `prepare_fb` and don't decrease it in `cleanup_fb`. The
opposite can also be true.
In fact, the struct drm_plane .state shouldn't be accessed directly
but instead, the `drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()` helper function should
be used. So, we could stick to this check, but using
`drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state()`. But actually, this check is not really
needed. We can increase and decrease the refcount symmetrically without
problems.
This is going to make the code more simple and consistent.

oder-chiou pushed a commit to oder-chiou/linux-soundwire that referenced this pull request May 5, 2026
Currently our IO accessors all use register addressing without offsets,
but we could safely use offset addressing (without writeback) to
simplify and optimize the generated code.
To function correctly under a hypervisor which emulates IO accesses, we
must ensure that any faulting/trapped IO access results in an ESR_ELx
value with ESR_ELX.ISS.ISV=1 and with the tranfer register described in
ESR_ELx.ISS.SRT. This means that we can only use loads/stores of a
single general purpose register (or the zero register), and must avoid
writeback addressing modes. However, we can use immediate offset
addressing modes, as these still provide ESR_ELX.ISS.ISV=1 and a valid
ESR_ELx.ISS.SRT when those accesses fault at Stage-2.
Currently we only use register addressing without offsets. We use the
"r" constraint to place the address into a register, and manually
generate the register addressing by surrounding the resulting register
operand with square braces, e.g.
| static __always_inline void __raw_writeq(u64 val, volatile void __iomem *addr)
| {
| asm volatile("str %x0, [%1]" : : "rZ" (val), "r" (addr));
| }
Due to this, sequences of adjacent accesses need to generate addresses
using separate instructions. For example, the following code:
| void writeq_zero_8_times(void *ptr)
| {
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 0);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 1);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 2);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 3);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 4);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 5);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 6);
| writeq_relaxed(0, ptr + 8 * 7);
| }
... is compiled to:
| <writeq_zero_8_times>:
| str xzr, [x0]
| add x1, x0, #0x8
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x1, x0, #0x10
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x1, x0, #0x18
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x1, x0, #0x20
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x1, x0, #0x28
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x1, x0, #0x30
| str xzr, [x1]
| add x0, x0, #0x38
| str xzr, [x0]
| ret
As described above, we could safely use immediate offset addressing,
which would allow the ADDs to be folded into the address generation for
the STRs, resulting in simpler and smaller generated assembly. We can do
this by using the "o" constraint to allow the compiler to generate
offset addressing (without writeback) for a memory operand, e.g.
| static __always_inline void __raw_writeq(u64 val, volatile void __iomem *addr)
| {
| volatile u64 __iomem *ptr = addr;
| asm volatile("str %x0, %1" : : "rZ" (val), "o" (*ptr));
| }
... which results in the earlier code sequence being compiled to:
| <writeq_zero_8_times>:
| str xzr, [x0]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#8]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#16]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#24]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#32]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#40]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#48]
| str xzr, [x0, thesofproject#56]
| ret
As Will notes at:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/20240117160528.GA3398@willie-the-truck/
... some compilers struggle with a plain "o" constraint, so it's
preferable to use "Qo", where the additional "Q" constraint permits
using non-offset register addressing.
This patch modifies our IO write accessors to use "Qo" constraints,
resulting in the better code generation described above. The IO read
accessors are left as-is because ARM64_WORKAROUND_DEVICE_LOAD_ACQUIRE
requires that non-offset register addressing is used, as the LDAR
instruction does not support offset addressing.
When compiling v6.8-rc1 defconfig with GCC 13.2.0, this saves ~4KiB of

Aside from the better code generation, there should be no functional
change as a result of this patch. I have lightly tested this patch,
including booting under KVM (where some devices such as PL011 are

oder-chiou pushed a commit to oder-chiou/linux-soundwire that referenced this pull request May 5, 2026
With BPF_PROBE_MEM, BPF allows de-referencing an untrusted pointer. To
thwart invalid memory accesses, the JITs add an exception table entry
for all such accesses. But in case the src_reg + offset is a userspace
address, the BPF program might read that memory if the user has
mapped it.
Make the verifier add guard instructions around such memory accesses and
skip the load if the address falls into the userspace region.
The JITs need to implement bpf_arch_uaddress_limit() to define where
the userspace addresses end for that architecture or TASK_SIZE is taken
as default.
The implementation is as follows:
REG_AX = SRC_REG
if(offset)
REG_AX += offset;
REG_AX >>= 32;
if (REG_AX <= (uaddress_limit >> 32))
DST_REG = 0;
else
DST_REG = *(size *)(SRC_REG + offset);
Comparing just the upper 32 bits of the load address with the upper
32 bits of uaddress_limit implies that the values are being aligned down
to a 4GB boundary before comparison.
The above means that all loads with address <= uaddress_limit + 4GB are
skipped. This is acceptable because there is a large hole (much larger
than 4GB) between userspace and kernel space memory, therefore a
correctly functioning BPF program should not access this 4GB memory
above the userspace.
Let's analyze what this patch does to the following fentry program
dereferencing an untrusted pointer:
SEC("fentry/tcp_v4_connect")
int BPF_PROG(fentry_tcp_v4_connect, struct sock *sk)
{
*(volatile long *)sk;
return 0;
}
BPF Program before | BPF Program after

7: (b7) r0 = 0
8: (95) exit
As you can see from above, in the best case (off=0), 5 extra instructions
are emitted.
Now, we analyze the same program after it has gone through the JITs of
ARM64 and RISC-V architectures. We follow the single load instruction
that has the untrusted pointer and see what instrumentation has been
added around it.

KMSAN reported uninit-value access in __unix_walk_scc() [1].
In the list_for_each_entry_reverse() loop, when the vertex's index
equals it's scc_index, the loop uses the variable vertex as a
temporary variable that points to a vertex in scc. And when the loop
is finished, the variable vertex points to the list head, in this case
scc, which is a local variable on the stack (more precisely, it's not
even scc and might underflow the call stack of __unix_walk_scc():
container_of(&scc, struct unix_vertex, scc_entry)).
However, the variable vertex is used under the label prev_vertex. So
if the edge_stack is not empty and the function jumps to the
prev_vertex label, the function will access invalid data on the
stack. This causes the uninit-value access issue.
Fix this by introducing a new temporary variable for the loop.

KMSAN reported uninit-value access in raw_lookup() [1]. Diag for raw
sockets uses the pad field in struct inet_diag_req_v2 for the
underlying protocol. This field corresponds to the sdiag_raw_protocol
field in struct inet_diag_req_raw.
inet_diag_get_exact_compat() converts inet_diag_req to
inet_diag_req_v2, but leaves the pad field uninitialized. So the issue
occurs when raw_lookup() accesses the sdiag_raw_protocol field.
Fix this by initializing the pad field in
inet_diag_get_exact_compat(). Also, do the same fix in
inet_diag_dump_compat() to avoid the similar issue in the future.

On ARM64, the pointer to task_struct is always available in the sp_el0
register and therefore the calls to bpf_get_current_task() and
bpf_get_current_task_btf() can be inlined into a single MRS instruction.
Here is the difference before and after this change:
Before:
; struct task_struct *task = bpf_get_current_task_btf();

64: add x7, x0, #0x0 <-------------- 0xffff8000802b797c <+4>: ret
After:
; struct task_struct *task = bpf_get_current_task_btf();

oder-chiou pushed a commit to oder-chiou/linux-soundwire that referenced this pull request May 5, 2026
Currently, BPF_CALL is always jited to indirect call. When target is
within the range of direct call, BPF_CALL can be jited to direct call.
For example, the following BPF_CALL
call __htab_map_lookup_elem
is always jited to indirect call:
mov x10, #0xffffffffffff18f4
movk x10, #0x821, lsl thesofproject#16
movk x10, #0x8000, lsl thesofproject#32
blr x10
When the address of target __htab_map_lookup_elem is within the range of
direct call, the BPF_CALL can be jited to:
bl 0xfffffffffd33bc98
This patch does such jit optimization by emitting arm64 direct calls for
BPF_CALL when possible, indirect calls otherwise.
Without this patch, the jit works as follows.
1. First pass
A. Determine jited position and size for each bpf instruction.
B. Computed the jited image size.
2. Allocate jited image with size computed in step 1.
3. Second pass
A. Adjust jump offset for jump instructions
B. Write the final image.
This works because, for a given bpf prog, regardless of where the jited
image is allocated, the jited result for each instruction is fixed. The
second pass differs from the first only in adjusting the jump offsets,
like changing "jmp imm1" to "jmp imm2", while the position and size of
the "jmp" instruction remain unchanged.
Now considering whether to jit BPF_CALL to arm64 direct or indirect call
instruction. The choice depends solely on the jump offset: direct call
if the jump offset is within 128MB, indirect call otherwise.
For a given BPF_CALL, the target address is known, so the jump offset is
decided by the jited address of the BPF_CALL instruction. In other words,
for a given bpf prog, the jited result for each BPF_CALL is determined
by its jited address.
The jited address for a BPF_CALL is the jited image address plus the
total jited size of all preceding instructions. For a given bpf prog,
there are clearly no BPF_CALL instructions before the first BPF_CALL
instruction. Since the jited result for all other instructions other
than BPF_CALL are fixed, the total jited size preceding the first
BPF_CALL is also fixed. Therefore, once the jited image is allocated,
the jited address for the first BPF_CALL is fixed.
Now that the jited result for the first BPF_CALL is fixed, the jited
results for all instructions preceding the second BPF_CALL are fixed.
So the jited address and result for the second BPF_CALL are also fixed.
Similarly, we can conclude that the jited addresses and results for all
subsequent BPF_CALL instructions are fixed.
This means that, for a given bpf prog, once the jited image is allocated,
the jited address and result for all instructions, including all BPF_CALL
instructions, are fixed.
Based on the observation, with this patch, the jit works as follows.
1. First pass
Estimate the maximum jited image size. In this pass, all BPF_CALLs
are jited to arm64 indirect calls since the jump offsets are unknown
because the jited image is not allocated.
2. Allocate jited image with size estimated in step 1.
3. Second pass
A. Determine the jited result for each BPF_CALL.
B. Determine jited address and size for each bpf instruction.
4. Third pass
A. Adjust jump offset for jump instructions.
B. Write the final image.

When qstats-get operation is executed, callbacks of netdev_stats_ops
are called. The bnxt_get_queue_stats{rx | tx} collect per-queue stats
from sw_stats in the rings.
But {rx | tx | cp}_ring are allocated when the interface is up.
So, these rings are not allocated when the interface is down.
The qstats-get is allowed even if the interface is down. However,
the bnxt_get_queue_stats{rx | tx}() accesses cp_ring and tx_ring
without null check.
So, it needs to avoid accessing rings if the interface is down.
Reproducer:
ip link set $interface down
./cli.py --spec netdev.yaml --dump qstats-get
OR
ip link set $interface down
python ./stats.py

…of ftrace_return_to_handler
Naresh Kamboju reported a "Bad frame pointer" kernel warning while
running LTP trace ftrace_stress_test.sh in riscv. We can reproduce the
same issue with the following command:
```
$ cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing
$ echo 'f:myprobe do_nanosleep%return args1=$retval' > dynamic_events
$ echo 1 > events/fprobes/enable
$ echo 1 > tracing_on
$ sleep 1
```
And we can get the following kernel warning:

The reason is that the stack layout for constructing argument for the
ftrace_return_to_handler in the return_to_handler does not match the
__arch_ftrace_regs structure of riscv, leading to unexpected results.

The hangup happens because nothing in` perf` or `elfutils` checks if a
mapped file is easily readable.
The change conservatively skips all non-regular files.

Before calling ttm_bo_populate() in the CPU fault path of a bo,
we assert that the bo is not being migrated. However, for
local bos we share the reservation object with other local bos
that might be in the process of being migrated. Also some VM
operations may attach USAGE_KERNEL fences to the common
reservation object and trigger false positives from the assert.
So remove the assert and instead wait for bo idle. This may
unnecessarily wait for idle in some cases but since we're
doing this wait later in the fault path anyway we might as
well do it here as well.
This fixes warnings like:

The cpuidle governor callbacks for update, select and reflect
are always running on the actual idle entering/exiting CPU, so
use the more optimized this_cpu_ptr() to access the internal teo
data.
This brings down the latency-critical teo_reflect() from

Before calling ttm_bo_populate() in the CPU fault path of a bo,
we assert that the bo is not being migrated. However, for
local bos we share the reservation object with other local bos
that might be in the process of being migrated. Also some VM
operations may attach USAGE_KERNEL fences to the common
reservation object and trigger false positives from the assert.
So remove the assert and instead wait for bo idle. This may
unnecessarily wait for idle in some cases but since we're
doing this wait later in the fault path anyway we might as
well do it here as well.
This fixes warnings like:

Do not use memcpy() to extract syscall arguments from struct pt_regs
but rather just perform direct assignments.
Update syscall_set_arguments() too to keep syscall_get_arguments()
and syscall_set_arguments() in sync.
With Generic Entry patch[1] and turn on audit, the performance
benchmarks from perf bench basic syscall on kunpeng920 gives roughly
a 1% performance uplift.
| Metric | W/O this patch | With this patch | Change |
| ---------- | -------------- | --------------- | --------- |
| Total time | 2.241 [sec] | 2.211 [sec] | ↓1.36% |
| usecs/op | 0.224157 | 0.221146 | ↓1.36% |
| ops/sec | 4,461,157 | 4,501,409 | ↑0.9% |
Disassembly shows that using direct assignment causes
syscall_set_arguments() to be inlined and cuts the instruction count by
five or six compared to memcpy(). Because __audit_syscall_entry() only
uses four syscall arguments, the compiler has also elided the copy of
regs->regs[4] and regs->regs[5].

During Function Level Reset recovery, the MANA driver reads
hardware BAR0 registers that may temporarily contain garbage values.
The SHM (Shared Memory) offset read from GDMA_REG_SHM_OFFSET is used
to compute gc->shm_base, which is later dereferenced via readl() in
mana_smc_poll_register(). If the hardware returns an unaligned or
out-of-range value, the driver must not blindly use it, as this would
propagate the hardware error into a kernel crash.
The following crash was observed on an arm64 Hyper-V guest running
kernel 6.17.0-3013-azure during VF reset recovery triggered by HWC
timeout.

From the crash signature x20 = ffff8000a200001b, this address
ends in 0x1b which is not 4-byte aligned, so the 'ldr w1, [x20]'
instruction (readl) triggers the arm64 alignment fault (FSC = 0x21).
The root cause is in mana_gd_init_vf_regs(), which computes:
gc->shm_base = gc->bar0_va + mana_gd_r64(gc, GDMA_REG_SHM_OFFSET);
The offset is used without any validation. The same problem exists
in mana_gd_init_pf_regs() for sriov_base_off and sriov_shm_off.
Fix this by validating all offsets before use:
- VF: check shm_off is within BAR0, properly aligned to 4 bytes
(readl requirement), and leaves room for the full 256-bit
(32-byte) SMC aperture.
- PF: check sriov_base_off is within BAR0, aligned to 8 bytes
(readq requirement), and leaves room to safely read the
sriov_shm_off register at sriov_base_off + GDMA_PF_REG_SHM_OFF.
Then check sriov_shm_off leaves room for the full SMC aperture.
All arithmetic uses subtraction rather than addition to avoid
integer overflow on garbage values.
Define SMC_APERTURE_SIZE (32 bytes, derived from the 256-bit aperture
width)
Return -EPROTO on invalid values. The existing recovery path in
mana_serv_reset() already handles -EPROTO by falling through to PCI
device rescan, giving the hardware another chance to present valid
register values after reset.

Eulgyu Kim reported the splat below with a repro. [0]
The repro sets up a UDP reuseport group with a cBPF prog and
replaces it with a new one while another thread is sending
a UDP packet to the group.
The reuseport prog is freed by sk_reuseport_prog_free().
bpf_prog_put() is called for "e"BPF prog to destruct through
multiple stages while cBPF prog is freed immediately by
bpf_release_orig_filter() and bpf_prog_free().
If a reuseport prog is detached from the setsockopt() path
(reuseport_attach_prog() or reuseport_detach_prog()),
sk_reuseport_prog_free() is called without waiting for RCU
readers to complete, resulting in various bugs.
Let's defer freeing the reuseport cBPF prog after one RCU
grace period.
Note "e"BPF prog is safe as is unless the fast path starts
to touch fields destroyed in bpf_prog_put_deferred() and
__bpf_prog_put_noref().
