The failing CodeQL check is for code that is not used in production, so the security concern is not valid. We should address this somehow, especially to make it clear that this function should never be used in production (and maybe even throwing an error if so) but this release is good to go.

Confirmed in discussion with @bjester and @rtibbles that we will disregard the CodeQL check, as the issue is only in dev mode, and it's not a security concern (despite the fact that it is not obvious that this code is not used in production. but it's not)
