nice clean up, thanks! I still think though, that a few redundant variable initialisation and some other issues could have been easier avoided if respective variables were declared in their immediate usage scope...

Would it be better to move unsigned int size; to line 92 inside if (header.p.header_high.part.large) {}?

we could in this case, but like I said in the answer to @lyakh using local scopes leads to shadowed variables. I don't feel one solution is better than the other...

A lot of minor fixes to reduce the volume of warnings to a reasonable level where maintainers can actually track changes....
I plan to submit all this upstream but reviews and comments would not hurt, and I expect kbuild reports as well.
